Cohesive Feel

Located in the home's new addition with side entry, the laundry room and mudroom have a cohesive feel thanks to the same soothing color palette and textured wallpaper. The mudroom provides a spot to change shoes and transition from the outdoors, while the laundry room offers a comfortable space for getting home chores done.

Inspired by Nature

The lavender, pink, coral and different shades of orange seen in the linen mesh grass cloth wallpaper chosen for the laundry room and mudroom are the same colors seen in the beautiful sunsets that make Maine special.

Clean Dream Machine

The laundry room’s white front-load washer allows you to create customized washing cycles. The coordinating white front-load electric dryer has advanced moisture sensing to help prevent over drying, so you can dry clothes efficiently and keep them in tip-top shape.

Open Storage

Two floating white shelves above the washer and dryer provide open storage for folded towels and laundry essentials, with space for a storage box and woven baskets that make it easy to keep similar products and small items grouped together.

Smooth Transition

A pocket door off the laundry room provides a smooth transition to the staircase that leads down to the home's glass enclosed side entry. "If you live here and this is messy because you're doing laundry, you can completely partition yourself from everything else," says designer Brian Patrick Flynn. "And then because it's a pocket door, it doesn't take up any space."

Color Coordination

A vintage English bench found locally by the HGTV Urban Oasis 2020 design team was stripped and sprayed the same shade of lavender seen in the linen mesh grass cloth wallpaper that unites these hard-working areas of the home.

Nautical Powder Room

The laundry room, mudroom and side entry enjoy easy access to the home's spacious powder room, a classic space with nautical-inspired wallpaper and lots of natural light.

Defined Zones

A short partition wall between the washer and dryer and bench seating area helps define the different zones of this well-designed space.

Abstract Art

Framed abstract wall art picks up the pink tones seen in the wallpaper that unites the different areas in this multi-functional space.

Cohesive Design

The white frames on the abstract wall art pop against the colorful wallpaper. "Even though there's a bunch of color happening in the house, as a whole, it's very sound and cohesive," says designer Brian Patrick Flynn.

Mudroom Extras

A cozy throw blanket, a potted plant and a marble bowl that creates a stylish catchall tray decorate the top of the vintage bench. A durable tote bag by the bench sits ready for errands or day trips to explore the beauty of Maine.

Grab and Go

The sleek marble bowl makes it easy to corral keys, sunglasses and other small grab-and-go items you need as you head out of the laundry room and mudroom, and into the garage or driveway outside.

Handy Hanging Storage

This wider view of the laundry room shows the solar powered “fresh air” skylights that keep the space light and bright, and hooks on the wall across from the bench that provide hanging storage.

Say Bye to Clutter

The sturdy hooks offer a way to keep jackets, handbags, scarves and other items easily accessible, so the bench and floor stay free from clutter.

Flexible Space

This view from the laundry room offers a close-up look at the cased opening with pocket door that closes off this space from the stairs that lead down to side entry of the home.

Open and Airy

This view looking up the side entry stairs to the laundry room highlights the cable railing on the white painted staircase that keeps the space feeling open and airy.

Seaside Art

Right off the side entry, designer Brian Patrick Flynn commissioned this painting of a young female sailor by artist Karen Musgraves, that offers a modern take on sailors and captains. A collection of colorful books on a vintage trunk below adds options for reading time.

Art with Attitude

Another painting inside the side entry depicts a gruff and salty male sailor, with a bold yellow background that pops against the striped wallpaper.

Bold Statement

Large abstract orange and white art on wall by the stairs makes a bold statement and picks up the orange tones in the linen mesh grass cloth wallpaper that helps unify this hard-working section of the home.

Extra Details

A vintage industrial mudroom bench by the stairs, found at a local Portland, Maine, antique shop, offers a spot to take a call or drop or grab a handbag before entering and exiting the home. A white pedestal provides a home for an easy-care plant that adds a touch of greenery to the space.

Sunny Shades

The solar powered “fresh air” skylights in the side entry include orange shades that pick up the orange color seen in the linen mesh grass cloth wallpaper and the abstract wall art.

Safe and Secure

A touch-to-wake keypad by the side entry door lights up when you approach, part of the home's wireless security system that protects the house indoors and out.

Bright and Airy

The combination of the side entry's windows and skylights that allow fresh air inside make the space bright and airy. "We're leaving the windows uncovered in here because we need the light," says designer Brian Patrick Flynn.

Warm Welcome

A selection of blooming potted plants by the walkway with simple paver system off the driveway creates a warm welcome for the side entry of this bold maritime retreat.

Sneak Peek

The side entry shows the impressive sneak peek that greets visitors to this laid-back and homey Portland, Maine property. "It's a showstopper from the street and from the driveway because you can't help but notice all the color inside," says designer Brian Patrick Flynn.
