In a large kitchen, designer Heather Hungeling prefers to create two smaller islands instead of one behemoth — a too-large island becomes an obstacle to get around instead of a boost to functionality. After 10. In the old space, the old sink was a stand alone vanity, not leaving any space for other appliances. With the new cabintes, and sink, the Kitchen Cousins were able to put a new built-in dishwasher for the Grahams. This is a huge addition to the new kitchen. There was always room for a dishwasher, but no place to put one till now. As seen on HGTV's "Kitchen Cousins".

Aside from its sleek, clean appearance, glass countertops have many benefits. Glass can be cut into any shape and texture and can be stained in any color. Even though it's a pricier option, it's becoming increasingly more popular because of its modern look. It's easy to keep clean and its non-porous surface makes it stain-resistant and one of the most hygienic countertop materials available. To make it more durable, choose glass that's at least 1 inch thick and tempered. Danenberg Design continued the sleek look in this modern Italian kitchen with lacquered kitchen cabinets and stainless steel appliances.

White Kitchen Countertops

The contrast of darker lower cabinets with white upper cabinets can open up an otherwise dim kitchen. A beautiful crisp white stone countertop is a good incentive to keep clutter off the counters for a clean, modern look.

Although Sarah Barnard designed this kitchen for a Mediterranean estate, she avoided a stuffy Old World look by adding wow factor. The 180 degree view of the Bay Bridge and the surrounding downtown area makes the space uniquely charming and can be seen from the space that includes the kitchen and the open dining area, two other lounge seating areas and a media room that includes a desk area and a murphy bed, but closes off from the rest of the space with custom pocket doors. Durable and easy to clean, quartz imitates the look of granite or marble, but is more resistant to stains and scratches. Another bonus is quartz countertops come in a wide range of colors and have a uniform look, opposed to natural stone.

Kitchen of the HGTV Dream Home 2012 located in Midway, Utah. Engineered quartz is bacteria resistant, and its harder than granite, so you can cut right on it. Its a great heavy surface, but the consistent color makes it feel light and clean.

The first step in installing a DIY kitchen countertop is to create a template. Measure your surface area using a tape measure, then use sheets of poster board or another similar material to create the template. You may have to tape the pieces together. This template can then be used to create your countertop.

Choosing your countertop material might be the toughest part because of the sheer number of options that are available, including laminate and Formica. Concrete, stainless steel and ceramic tiles are also fairly cost-efficient options that can be used when constructing a do-it-yourself countertop.

If you have a true artistic spirit, then you may want to consider a recycled glass countertop. For this countertop, you will apply the same concept that is used to make mosaics. Using broken glass and tile adhesive, you can create a limitless range of designs and patterns.

Regardless of the countertop surface you choose, keep in mind that heavier materials, like granite and Corian countertops, will most often require the help of professionals to install. You can, however, cut the cost by taking countertop measurements on your own.
