Valentine's Day Gift Idea: DIY Herb Garden Kit
Learn how to make a small growing kit for friends, family and kids this Valentine's Day. Fill it with everything they'll need to cultivate their own little herb garden.

With Valentine's Day and the spring gardening season right around the corner from each other, an herb garden kit is an easy and practical gift to make and give this time of year. Herbs are great for companion planting, they thrive when planted together in the same pot and are easy to grow indoors. They make for easy presents for teachers, grandparents or BFFs, and kids will enjoy the opportunity to craft, create and learn about container gardening, too.
Materials Needed
- terra-cotta pot with saucer
- seeds
- soil
- painter's tape
- paintbrush
- latex paint
- scissors
- brown kraft paper
- brown paper bag
- tags
- yarn or string
- pencil or marker
Add Hearts
Begin by cleaning a clay pot and saucer. Cut painter's tape into hearts and place around the container's exterior.

Paint
Use a paintbrush and latex paint to coat the entire surface, including over the edges of the tape decoration (Image 1). Apply a second and third coat if needed. Once the paint is dry, remove the tape to expose the underlying hearts (Image 2).

Wrap Seeds
Wrap the individual seed packets with brown kraft paper and label each accordingly. Use yarn or string to neatly attach the labels. While you still have the kraft paper out, run pieces through a paper shredder to make easy filler for your gift. No shredder? Cut the paper with scissors for the same effect. Next, fill a brown paper lunch bag with four cups of potting soil.
