Make a Personal Apple Pie in a Pie Iron

A from-scratch take on a campfire classic, campout-friendly whipped cream included. 

Before the campout: Thinly slice apples, mix with juice and zest of 1 lemon. Add apple mixture to 1 zip-top bag. In a second zip-top bag, add sugars, cinnamon, and nutmeg. 
At the campout: Grease inside of pie iron with melted butter. Line each side with a slice of white bread. Add more softened butter to the inside of the bread. Empty the spice mixture into the apples and mix. Add 1/6 of the pie mixture to each pie iron. Place on coals for 3 minutes per side, or until brown.

  • 4 large apples (a mix of red and green work best)

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • pinch cayenne pepper
  • 1 stick unsalted butter
  • 12 slices sliced potato bread
  • 2 gallon-sized zip-top bags

Directions

  • 1 cup whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

While pie irons cook over coals, shake the whipping cream, powdered sugar and vanilla in a pint-sized mason jar. Spoon whipped cream over apple pie.
