Build Something This Weekend
Woodworking is a rewarding hobby with endless possibilities suited for every skill level. If you’re a newbie, don’t be intimidated. There are many super-simple projects you can try that will help you learn and get your feet wet. And contrary to want you may think, you don’t need a lot of expensive tools. With just a few basic tools — yes, even hand tools — you can learn the art of woodworking. (Hint: Try estate sales and auctions to find secondhand power tools and hand tools. Older hand tools were often better made than their new counterparts, and brands like Craftsman come with a lifetime warranty even if you buy it secondhand.)
We've compiled our best projects and plans for you. Many of our easy projects can be built with scrap wood like fence panels and old pallets and require no special cuts or joinery. Our more complicated projects will have you sharpening your talents in such skills as mitered corners, routing grooves, and pocket-hole joinery.
Cedar Birdhouses
Skill Level: Easy
These birdhouses were made from cedar fence panels, the same sized fence panels on which the houses hang. This is a great way to upcycle an old fence if the wood is in good shape. We suggest using cedar because it is exterior-grade and wildlife-friendly. The cost of building the birdhouses was minimal and we did it in one afternoon. Use a handsaw and a miter box if you don’t have a power miter saw. If you don’t have an orbital sander, a sanding block will do just fine. But you will need a drill to cut out the holes so the birds can get in their houses.

Wood + Blue Resin Tray
Skill Level: Easy
We all love live-edge wood and blue resin tables — also known as river tables — but building them takes some skill, money and time. Instead, start small with this wood slice and resin tray with leather handles. Once you get the hang of it, you can move up to a table or bench. If you’re looking for holiday gift ideas, these trays are perfect.

Set of Regulation Cornhole Boards
Skill Level: Easy to Intermediate
We built our cornhole boards according to the requirements of the American Cornhole Association. The materials aren’t complicated — it’s made from 1/2” plywood, 2x4s, deck screws and a couple of carriage bolts. A circular saw, a jigsaw and a sander are the only power tools you’ll need. If you don’t have a circular saw, have the plywood cut to size where you buy it.

Covered Sandbox
Skill Level: Intermediate
Want to get some practice at basic framing? This adorable sandbox requires no mitered corners, pocket holes or tricky cuts, just simple right-angle butt joints. Basic woodworking power tools are needed — a drill and circular saw. Also, make sure you have a speed square on hand to ensure your right angles are perfect and your roof rafters have the correct angle.

Porch Package Bench
Skill Level: Intermediate
Prevent porch pirates from stealing your parcels with this locking storage box that can also serve as extra seating on your porch, entryway or stoop. The frame was constructed with 2x4s and 2x2s and then covered in 1/2” plywood. Vertical 1x4s were added to the front to create decorative recessed panels. The plywood top is hinged for easy opening and a hasps latch with a lock makes the bench securely lockable. We added a cushion for comfort and style.

A-Frame Doghouse
Skill Level: Intermediate
A place to escape the elements is a must for dogs that spend any time outdoors. This DIY doghouse project is made from a single sheet of plywood and some dimensional lumber. Your doghouse should be proportionate to your dog. Bigger is not necessarily better, because dogs tend to feel more secure in small spaces. Also, a properly sized doghouse helps your pet use its natural body heat to warm the interior and stay comfortable during cold weather. Your dog’s safety is a priority, so use good quality plywood and wood that’s free of cracks and splinters. Use pressure-treated wood only for the base where your pet can’t chew on.

Bottle Centerpiece
Skill Level: Easy
It doesn’t get much simpler than this, and you can make it for next to nothing if you use thrifted pieces. The materials are basically just one salvaged 6-foot board, recycled bottles and wood glue. Using reclaimed wood gives this floral display a rustic vibe, but if you’re looking for something more refined, use a new piece of hardwood like mahogany, ipe or cherry, then stain it as desired. If you plan on painting the piece, a standard pine board will do just fine.

Adjustable Pegboard Shelf
Skill Level: Easy
Plywood, a 1x6 board and dowels come together to make this versatile open shelving unit. The trickiest part — and it’s not that hard — is evenly laying out the pegboard holes. To make sure you get it just right, use a standard piece of pegboard to plot your layout. Then drill the holes using a hole-saw bit that is the same size as your dowels. Use 1x2s to secure the plywood to the wall, then place your dowels and 1x6 shelves in your desired configuration.
