What to Consider When Choosing an Outdoor Fountain
The world of outdoor accessories and decor can be intimidating with so many options and aesthetics to choose from. That’s why we asked Ashley McCallister, The Home Depot’s Watering and Pool Merchant, for her opinion on what’s most important when choosing an outdoor fountain.
Location: Since outdoor fountains need a power source, it’s important to keep that in mind when placing your fountain. If you need an electric outlet plugin, the placement of your fountain is limited to where they are located in the backyard. Solar-powered fountains will need to be exposed to the sunlight, so that’s also important to consider.
Material: Material and weight are especially important when choosing the right outdoor fountain for your space. “The best choice for you depends on your lifestyle and landscape needs, but resin and fiberglass options specifically offer great value,” McCallister says. “They mimic natural stone or ceramic while being lightweight, shatter-resistant, and easy to relocate.” If you live in a location with harsh weather, make sure to select a fountain constructed with materials to withstand the climate. It also needs to be light enough to move if need be.
Style and Size: “Determining the right size is all about how much space you have,” says McCallister. If you opt to make your fountain the centerpiece or focal point of your outdoor space, make sure it stands at least four to five feet tall so that it doesn’t get visually lost. A tiered fountain is one style that would fit in a large space for its tall height and statement-like structure. A vertical wall fountain is a great option if you have limited space.
Care: To ensure longevity, you have to be able to take care of your fountain. “One of the most important things customers should know is that most fountains use recirculated water,” McCallister says. “You should continually monitor water levels and replenish the supply when needed, and it's best to completely change a fountain's water a few times a year.” Make sure that the fountain pump stays completely submerged, which will vary depending on the size of your fountain.
Bugs may also present as a problem with any water feature you may have. According to McCallister, “One solution is to use a submersible pump to create a fresh flow of water to deter insects. For extra protection, you can treat the water regularly with EPA-approved mosquito larvicide dunks or safe water-clarifying enzymes, which target larvae.”
