Bright and Fun

A cedar pergola — with fast-growing trumpet vines and an antler chandelier — defines this Newport Beach, California, dining area (designed by Eric Olsen). Screen-printed onto plywood, a phrase from one of the homeowner's favorite T-shirts became graphic artwork above the grill. Powder-coated red, Emeco’s lightweight aluminum chairs energize the weathered cedar deck with a hit of zingy color.

Vacationing at Home

Designer Caitlin Murray gave comedian and writer Josh Thomas' shaded Los Angeles front porch a vacation-y makeover. A peppy cabana-stripe rug from Serena & Lily and white CB2 planters filled with tropical plants give the space a relaxing ambiance. The table from Blu Dot is made of rustproof powder-coated steel; the chairs from Industry West are polypropylene.

A Splendid Space to Dine

Designer Lou Harris' screened-in porch is oh-so regal. "I needed a table for 12 or more and couldn't find one I liked, so I had one made," says Lou. She used a 42-inch-by-106-inch piece of tempered glass on top of scrolled concrete bases from Hooker Furniture. The chairs are lattice-back wicker from Lane Venture topped with blue Sunbrella cushions. On the floor, an outdoor sisal rug complements brick laid in a herringbone pattern. Check out her blue-rimmed glassware and, as a centerpiece, a porcelain Chinese footbath filled with pots of butter lettuce.

Breakfast With a View

Nearly every door in this beachside cottage leads to this super-cool wraparound deck. Which is perfect, because the homeowners use it all year — especially in the morning with coffee. Since the deck is uncovered, they coated it with wood protector by One Time to help keep it from weathering.

Time to Barbecue in Texas

An outdoor patio like this is a must in Austin. Homeowner and contractor Royce Flournoy made sure the space was fit for entertaining. "I love to barbecue," he says. A teak dining table and weatherproof plastic chairs liven the space up.

Secret Garden

This patio is a butterfly magnet and a secret garden with creeping fig vines climbing up the house, located in Santa Monica, California. The table is One Kings Lane, and the matching chairs are from a flea market. The homeowner painted all the pieces Hint of Violet by Benjamin Moore, so they look like a set. The graphic lines of this zigzag outdoor fabric temper the sweetness of the lavender chairs.

A Pretty, Pink Porch

Nobody’s complaining about no air conditioning on this Annapolis, Maryland, screened porch designed by Sarah Hayes. A vintage table hosts chess games; rattan and plastic chairs by Serena & Lily can easily handle iced-tea spills. “Everything out here had to be kid- and dog-friendly,” says Sarah, who also chose virtually indestructible Trex flooring. The perky rug is from Wayfair.

Red, White and Nautical-Glam

New England has a way of making nautical irresistibly glam — think weathered wood and rattan textures; like this South Kingstown, Rhode Island, patio designed by Blakely Interior Design. A long cushioned bench provides plenty of seating for lobster bakes. Pillows in red, white and blue add serious style points.

A Tricked-Out Dinner Venue

HGTV designers Drew and Jonathan Scott's Las Vegas outdoor dining area is the dream. It features a TV, double-sided fireplace and built-in bench seating. The property didn’t always look like this. It had its drawbacks — generic tan walls, a mostly dirt backyard — but the pair transformed it in five months. Now tricked out with value-adds like an infinity pool and a two-bedroom casita for spillover guests, it’s a party-ready spot for the entire Scott clan.

Make It Snappy

The crisp color scheme of this Phoenix, Arizona home (designed by Emily Yeates) extends to the backyard. Snappy blacks and whites — the B.B.Begonia rug from Wayfair, the custom marble-top dining table — contrast with a cherry red door to the garage and an outdoor clock. A Sunbrella canopy shades the table during meals.

Nice in Nature

"Benches have a more relaxed vibe for groups than chairs," says designer Haskell Harris McKinney, who used white metal picnic benches from Ikea for her outdoor dining space in Charleston, South Carolina. As for accessories, Haskell made a table runner by painting a canvas drop cloth with exterior paint. "I threw the whole thing in the wash to mute the colors, then let it dry outside," she says. The sea-grass-covered pitcher and glasses are from World Market, and the pillow is by Cotton & Flax.

Outdoor Living

These homeowners eat dinner together on the porch as often as they can. And why wouldn't they? This breezy space is totally relaxing. For seating, they picked benches made of weather-resistant eucalyptus wood (from Pottery Barn). The main kitchen is just inside the house, but the family wanted a place to cook on the porch, too, so they put in a 20-foot granite countertop, cabinets, a Bull grill and a fryer.
