This TikToker’s Rustic Walk-In Fridge Has Us Swooning

Do you ever wish you could recreate a restaurant experience in your own kitchen? Content creator Megan Lavallie did. After working in restaurants for eight years, she brought a piece of the industry into her own home — but probably not in the way you’re thinking.

With the help of designers Neatly & Co. and Kara Childress and renovators Goodchild Builders, Lavallie created the food storage space of her dreams. She drew inspiration from root cellars, using limestone and wood to give the room a rustic feel — materials “that will age over time really beautifully,” she says in her video. She calls it a combination of a root cellar, supermarket and walk-in fridge.

“I’ve wanted a walk in fridge for years but this… THIS is what I didn’t know I wanted, thank you for the inspo!!” a commenter says.

The room is organized for a few different functions. Wooden drawers pull out to reveal cheeses and fruits, while heartier produce like potatoes and onions sit in overhead compartments like the ones in a grocery store. A wide countertop doubles as a pantry shelf and breakfast bar, with perfectly decanted juices and sliced bread ready to go in the mornings. Baskets of flowers hang from hooks on the far wall.

“What really ended up being the best part of this whole thing was the fresh-cut flower storage,” Lavallie says. “Now when my flowers start to wilt, I can make new arrangements right out of the fridge.”

Lavallie can set the temperature between 38 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit, so the space lives somewhere between a fridge and a pantry, storing produce alongside baked and canned goods. The cooling system is the type that restaurants use in their walk-ins, and it also powers a wine fridge on the other side of the wall, Lavallie explains in the comments on her video.

Commenters recommend a few adjustments for Lavallie to store everything optimally.

“Fruits and vegetables release ethylene gas, which will cause flowers to wilt, droop or fade prematurely,” a florist says.

Another person pointed out that juice should be kept colder than fresh produce. Lavallie replied that she plans to lower the temperature.

While root cellars and walk-in refrigerators are nothing new, this is the first one we’ve seen in this style. Between Lavallie’s project and Amy Hiraki’s tiny library, we’re loving the way people are getting creative with and making the most of home renovation. Who knew a pantry or a shed could be so dreamy?
