This Colorful Home in Katy, Texas, Is a Maximalist's Dream

As Veronica Solomon toured the house in Katy, Texas, that she’d eventually move into, she was thrilled by its blandness. There was beige for days — on the walls and floors — and plenty of rooms just waiting to be filled up. She looked forward to decorating it to the nines, all 2,500 square feet of it, and fully indulging her devotion to pretty stuff. “As someone who grew up in a family that never had the means for more than basic necessities, I felt very fortunate to be able to do this,” she says. Veronica ended up putting in wood-look porcelain-tile floors on the lower level and engineered wood upstairs, then piled on the goods. “Maximalism doesn’t have to mean clutter,” says Veronica, an interior designer who made every room look lovingly layered by repeating colors throughout the house, choosing patterns in big and small scales and grouping collections together, such as her blue-and-white ginger jar collection. Her other trick to keeping highly styled rooms from feeling chaotic: three storage units! “I just want to be surrounded by the things I love — I own up to that,” she says. “That said, my garage is a hot mess.” Why a dresser as a side table here? More room to show off fab stuff!

“My idea of relaxing is sitting here and just admiring my things,” Veronica says. So they would all work together, she repeated the blues from the Anthropologie sofa in the ottoman, the garden stool and the striped pillows. “And I brought in orange, since that’s opposite of blue on the color wheel,” she says. The botanical pattern of the sofa balances the leopard print on the Ballard Designs chair. A gold convex mirror from Wayfair revs up a wall filled with framed art. The eye needs a place to rest in this room; this white pendant by Regina Andrew does it. “I consider animal prints neutrals,” Veronica says (check out her printed chair!). Plus, the airy base of the faux-shagreen coffee table by Gabby opens up the space.

Veronica wanted this room to feel unique, just like the rest of her home. That’s why she brought in gold leaf lotus pendants by Worlds Away and an antelope-motif shade (the fabric is by Schumacher). Those graphic backsplash tiles are by Clé. The original cabinet fronts were changed to glass: hello, dishware. A mix of tones in the Gabby cowhide stools play off the porcelain tile floor. “Matching chairs bore me,” Veronica says. “An eclectic mix has personality, and the settee lets me relax while I eat.” Bursts of cream — in the chairs by RH and the Surya rug — ground the space. “Gathering my globe collection in one spot gives them impact,” Veronica says. See them on top of her cabinet back there?

“My daughter’s style isn’t as fussy as mine — she likes things monochromatic and clean,” Veronica says. She obliged with mostly white elements, a mod acrylic chair (Courtney is into vintage) and just a few dashes of color on the custom daybed. Fluffy stuff always makes any room comfy-cool. Adding fun texture plus a treat for feet: a sheepskin bench by Moss Home.

The teen was game to give his mom free rein, as long as he had a good desk (by West Elm) for drawing anime. “He also wanted a fridge, but that’s where I drew the line!” Veronica says. She went all out with pattern here. Since the striped bedding from Jungalow has thin lines and the ones in the chevron rug by Surya are large, they don’t compete. Custom drapes with a snakelike print are inspo for the drawings Joshua creates. With its ultrathin spokes, the sunburst mirror from HomeGoods has low-key charm. Plus, framed maps of London, a fave trip, lend a vintage vibe.

No bare spots allowed — yet the definitive color combo of black, white, and pops of red keeps things cohesive. Black grass cloth by Pacific Designs on the walls and custom drapes (with fabric by Fabricut) are a glam backdrop for the pattern party, while ceiling trim adds the finishing dressy touch. For major pizzazz, think b-i-g: the chandelier by Hudson Valley is 30 inches wide. In black and white, a rug (by Rizzy Home) makes a strong statement without distracting from the rest of the room.
