Materials + Tools

  • 2 Tbs. carnauba wax
  • 3 Tbs. shea butter
  • 2 Tbs. cocoa butter
  • 2-1/2 Tbs. jojoba oil
  • favorite essential oils
  • (2) 2-ounce tins with lids
  • double boiler
  • wooden skewer

1: Combine + Heat Ingredients

Place the double boiler over low to medium heat. If you don't have a double boiler, add water to a saucepan and place a glass bowl inside; don't let the glass bowl touch the water. Add all ingredients except the essential oils and slowly heat (Image 1). Stir continuously with a wooden skewer as the ingredients begin to melt together, but maintain the low heat to avoid bringing the ingredients to a boil (Image 2). Once all the ingredients are fully melted, remove the boiler from heat and add 18-20 combined drops of each essential oil (Image 3). For this blend, we used grapefruit essential oil and cedarwood essential oil. Note: Remember that essential oils are extremely concentrated and that some oils can be more harsh on skin than others. Always use fewer than 10 drops per oil and test any product you create with them for sensitivities.

2: Pour Into Tins

While the mixture is still warm, carefully pour equal amounts of the balm into each tin (Image 1). Allow the balm to solidify in the tin and cool for at least an hour before using (Image 2). Tip: Speed up the cooling process by placing tins in the refrigerator.

Materials + Tools

  • black fabric paint
  • green fabric paint
  • stencil brush
  • scissors stencil

1: Print + Cut Stencil

Start by printing or tracing your selected image onto the dull side of a piece of freezer paper (Image 1). Then lay the freezer paper down on a cutting mat and use a craft knife to cut out the image (Image 2).

2: Iron + Paint Stencil

Now lay the shiny, waxy side of the freezer paper stencil onto the canvas pouch (Image 1) and use an iron on a dry cotton or linen setting to adhere (Image 2). Prepare for painting by adding a piece of paper to the inside of the canvas pouch (Image 3). Next, add a small amount of fabric paint onto a plate and use a dabbing motion with the stencil brush to remove any extra paint from the brush (Image 4). Apply paint to the stencil with a quick dabbing motion, working your way from the edges to the center (Image 5). Let the paint dry completely.

3: Peel Off Stencil + Enjoy!

Once paint is fully dry, slowly peel off the stencil. Add your new DIY beard balm and other grooming tools and enjoy! Or make one as a gift for your favorite bearded dude.
