Materials Needed

  • cardboard file box
  • patterned fabric
  • solid colored fabric
  • ruler
  • pen
  • scissors
  • spray adhesive
  • hot glue gun
  • hot glue sticks
  • craft knife
  • (4) grommets
  • rope

Cut Fabric

Lay out a large piece of patterned fabric on a flat surface. Place the base of a cardboard filing box in the center of the fabric. Next, measure and mark one inch from all sides of the box. Remove the corners of the fabric, cutting in until you reach the one-inch mark from the corners of the box. The remaining fabric should look like a large cross. Cut in one inch toward each corner of the fabric. Repeat this process with a large piece of solid colored fabric.

Cover Box

Place the solid fabric inside the box and attach all side using spray adhesive. Now, lay the file box in the center of the patterned fabric. Hot glue around all edges of the fabric, and fold over the sides and into the box. At this point, the entire box should be wrapped, inside and out.

Cut a piece of patterned fabric that measures 21 inches by 24 inches. Place the top of the filing box in the center of the fabric piece, and hot glue the inside edge of the box top. Wrap the fabric around the top, adding more hot glue if necessary.

Mark the short sides of the box at approximately 4 1/2 inches and 8 1/2 inches. Then, use a craft knife to puncture the box, creating two round holes. Add grommets. Insert a rope into the holes creating a loop on the exterior of the box. Secure with knots on the inside of the box. Pro-tip: To keep the rope from fraying and to make it easier to go through the holes, wrap tape around both ends.

Voila!
