Most often featuring clean lines and simple, sleek, elegant design, modern design was first recognized after World War I. It evolved over the next decades into what became known as midcentury modern design — a distinctive style that first emerged from the Nordic countries of Europe after World War II. This style quickly spread around the world, and it's been heavily influencing architecture and interior design ever since.

If midcentury modern design feels like the right choice for your bathroom, one of the first elements to consider is the cabinet scheme. The midcentury modern style tends to emphasize minimalism when it comes to cabinets. As opposed to traditional cabinet designs, which may feature intricately designed crown molding, cutouts or elaborate hardware, midcentury modern cabinets often feature efficient, simple designs, with doors that are flush to the cabinet base and hardware in straightforward, angular designs (or in some cases, no hardware at all). Materials for these cabinets run the gamut in midcentury modern bathrooms, from high-quality hardwoods to laminate and even metal.

In many midcentury modern bathrooms, these sleek and simple cabinets may house single or double vessel-style sinks in an array of materials and colors from traditional white porcelain to copper, bronze or glass. The flowing design of a vessel sink can be a great complement to an angular cabinet scheme, combining two of the trademark designs of the midcentury modern movement in sharp angles and flowing, natural curves.

Similarly, large, centerpiece-style tubs in a wide selection of boldly curving designs can be a great complement to an otherwise angular approach to furniture and fixtures in a midcentury modern design. Faucets and handles can also display striking curved designs, creating even more visual interest and further emphasizing a modern design scheme.

When it comes to tile and other materials for floors and countertops, homeowners with midcentury modern bathrooms often look to implement a simple, straightforward design style, featuring flat, angular tile on walls (subway tile is particularly popular), and flat, matte or glossy countertop surfaces. For floors, elegant hardwood or high-quality tile is often featured, many times in simple, neutral colors like white, gray or black.

Decor in midcentury modern bathrooms is often kept very simple, with accessories and wall art kept minimal in an attempt to keep the overall space as uncluttered and efficient as possible. That said, a collection of black-and-white photographs in simple black frames, or a set of sleek and simple storage jars neatly arrayed on a countertop, can work well with a midcentury modern bathroom design.
