Corner bathtub design ideas are ideal for tucking a tub into an underutilized space in your bathroom. These tubs don't require the long wall space that standard bathtubs do. This design also frees up more space that can be used for a separate shower enclosure and more storage.

The placement of corner bathtubs also opens up the center section of a bathroom, which allows for better traffic flow in the bathroom.

Just because these corner bathtubs fit into a smaller space doesn't mean they necessarily have to be small, however. These tubs usually are five-sided and are designed so that two sides adjoin two walls. The basin can be triangular, oval, rectangular or even hourglass-shaped.

One benefit is that these corner bathtubs have a lot of practical space in the way of deck areas to place your assorted toiletries. You can get as intricate as you'd like for the design, as some feature air jets, massaging functions, or lighted chromotheraphy options, much like whirlpool tubs. Most have molded back rests and armrests for reclining comfort.

Corner bathtubs come in a wide variety of styles and designs. You can choose a tub with a thin rim and sleek, contemporary lines, or try an ornate style with a thicker rim. The current layout of your fixtures—such as the vanity and sink—will determine where you can place the tub. The style you choose should match the existing decor of your bath. Measure carefully, being sure to allow for a deck or surround if you are using a drop-in tub.

Consider positioning your corner tub where there already is existing plumbing to minimize costs of relocating or adding pipes and drains. If possible, you may want to have the bathtub near a window to take advantage of natural light and exterior views.

Corner bathtubs are usually made of acrylic or cast iron. Standard size is either 4 feet by 4 feet, or slightly larger at 5 feet by 5 feet. Depths are comparable to conventional bathtubs, between 21 and 26 inches. Basic models start as low as $800.

Be realistic about the size of bathtub that will fit in your bathroom. You may be tempted to get a bigger model, but it's better to install something slightly smaller and have plenty of space to move around, rather than making your bathroom feel cramped. The whole point is for you to gain more floor space.

Corner bathtubs can be a focal point in your bathroom. You'll be able to easily find one that fits your personal style. Built-in skirted tubs, available in both classic and more contemporary styles, need no platform or surround. The sleek lines of these tubs make them an excellent choice for modern bathroom designs. Drop-in corner bathtubs can take on high-end looks with surrounds finished with tile, slate or even marble. A traditional, classic surround could include painted white beaded board or dark wood stained panels.
