Mommy-and-Me Costume: Cookies and Milk

You and your toddler go together like ... well, milk and cookies! Whip up this cute costume using a cardboard box, felt, round chair cushions and basic craft supplies. Learn how to make your own.

Materials Needed:

  • large square cardboard box
  • scissors
  • hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • 2 cans white spray paint
  • black tempera (or acrylic craft) paint
  • paintbrush
  • wide black grosgrain ribbon
  • 2 tan round chair cushions
  • scissors
  • 1 sheet brown peel-and-stick felt
  • safety pins
  • 1-inch-wide white ribbon

Prep Cardboard Box

To make the milk carton, use scissors to cut off the box's top and bottom flaps so you're left with just a four-sided box. Set four cut flaps aside and discard the remaining flaps.

Prep Cardboard Box

Use scissors to cut top and bottom flaps off cardboard box so you are left with a topless and bottomless four sided box. Set four cut flaps aside and discard the remaining flaps.

Assemble Milk Carton Top

Cut two corners off one of the removed flaps (Image 1). Set cardboard corners to the side. Use a hot glue gun to create a right angle out of two cut cardboard flaps then attach the two cut corners to the right angle's center to stabilize it (Image 2). Cut one flap in half (Image 3). Save one half and discard the other. Glue cut half of cardboard flap to outer peak of right angle to resemble the top ridge of a milk carton (Image 4). Once glue has fully dried, spray-paint entire structure white and hand-letter "milk" onto both of the top's sides in black. Use a hot glue gun to attach ribbon underneath for tying under your chin.

Assemble Milk Carton Body

Spray-paint outside of cardboard box white and allow to dry (Image 1). Hand-paint "milk" lettering and cow spots onto outside of box and allow to dry (Image 2). Step into cardboard box and lift to desired position on body. Measure and cut black ribbon to appropriate length to serve as shoulder straps then attach these to the box's inside front and back with hot glue (Image 3).

Create Chocolate Chip Cookies

Cut jagged circles out of brown peel-and-stick felt to resemble chocolate chips (Image 1). Peel backing off felt and attach circles to just one side of both chair cushions (Image 2). Remove attached chair ties then use safety pins to attach two ribbons to the bare side of both chair cushions (Images 3 and 4). To wear, sandwich child between cushions and tie ribbons on shoulders (Image 5).
