Throw a Backyard Tailgate
While HGTV Urban Oasis 2017 in Knoxville, Tennessee has the ideal backyard for entertaining, anyone can throw a winning game day gathering with a little coaching. One of the most important elements to a great party is to create gathering zones for guests to eat, lounge and play.
Score a Touchdown With Your Table
Create a memorable table display by mixing old and new accessories. Start with a Turkish towel for your table cloth, then add vintage trophies for a classic look, and incorporate footballs, helmets and pom-poms to show your team spirit.
SEC-Worthy Spread
A playful sign showcases this Southern-themed menu with a big orange twist to include spicy orange chicken wings, pulled chicken and slaw sliders, warm pimento cheese, orange and white almond cookies, and peanut butter brownies.
Fun and Festive
Football field napkins, orange cups, and a custom football-inspired tin can for utensils add a spirited touch to this tailgate spread. Pom-poms work double-duty, as guests can grab them for the game.
Game Day Details
Footballs are n essential accessory to any tailgate table, plus, it encourages guests to throw the ball around before the big game. When in doubt, use fruit and vegetables as fillers. Oranges add a punch of color to this big orange gathering.
Spicy Orange Chicken Wings
Not having wings at a football party is like not having a wedding cake at a wedding. It doesn't make sense. These spicy orange chicken wings, courtesy of Knox Provisions, are hit with the crowds. Get the recipe.
Don't Forget the Kiddos
Have an easy, grab-and-go snack for those active kids. Watermelon and cantaloupe are the perfect treats on a hot game day.
Must-Have Beverage Station
No tailgate is complete without a stocked bar. Water, wine, fizzy drinks, beer, orange tea, and a collection of spirits are the perfect offerings for pre-gamming.
Game-Winning Cocktails
Instead of big batch cocktails, make a family-friendly orange tea or another fruity beverage and let age-appropriate guests pick which mini version of bourbon or whiskey they want to mix in. This adds an elevated level of personalization.
Mix and Mingle
Invite a good mix of people. From the hardcore sports fanatics who are still self-aware to the causal football fans who just want to mingle, a good group of diverse interests are sure keep a lively party going.
Our Neighborhood Mascot
Even the dog can get decked out for game days. Only for a quick photo did our furry friend rock the orange sunglasses and pom-poms. Good boy!
Football Fans Unite
A good host always has an eye on the comfort and enjoyment of their guests. To keep the party going serve drinks, replenish the food table, and make sure there's a good playlist set for halftimes and commercial breaks. Delegate tasks to those responsible party-goers who always ask "what can I do to help?".
Plush Accessories
Tartan plaid blankets and and plush outdoor pillows create an inviting sitting area around the fire pit. An eight six five (Knoxville's area code) canvas bag is cut and sewn into an outdoor pillow, a crafty and clever nod to the area.
Everyone is Game Day Ready
Knox, our dapper Labrador retriever, is ready for the game with his handsome bowtie. To be courteous of guests with pets, lay out a few bowls of water and a basket of tennis balls. The thoughtful gesture won't go unnoticed.
Lively Yard Games
For those who don't want to be glued to ESPN College GameDay on TV, have a few other competitive options. KanJam (shown in the picture), cornhole, and frisknock are party favorites. Play in teams or play solo, but don't forget "winner" gets next game.
Set Up a Photo Booth
From tailgates to birthday parties and other special events, a DIY photo booth is always a good idea. A painted piece of turf resembling a football field lined with pom-poms make a great backdrop. Add a basket of props and you're ready to shoot a memorable montage with friends.
Show Your Team Spirit
A basic digital point-and-shoot camera, a tripod that’s tall enough to extend to eye level and a remote shutter release for the camera are a few basics to make your DIY photo booth legit. A remote shutter release allows guests to take their own photo, letting you enjoy the party instead of playing photographer all day.
Playful Props
Football helmets, a bright orange feather boa, lively sunglasses, and #1 foam hands are among the fun and amusing photo props for guests to enjoy.
Take a Great Picture With Your Phone
"Selfies are fun, but there’s nothing like a great photo booth portrait," says Mallory Ziglar, HGTV Community Manager. "To get your next perfect profile photo, make sure your entire body is in the shot - don’t cut off any feet! Use the rule of thirds to frame your subject in the upper or lower third of the shot. Using grid mode makes this foolproof. Snap multiple shots to make sure you get at least one that isn’t blurry."
Transportation to the Game
A good set of cruising bikes are great to have on hand. HGTV Urban Oasis 2017 is a short bike ride away from the University of Tennessee and Neyland Stadium. Want to see more? Tour the home and enter for your chance to win.
