"I love the outdoor garage space because it's so unexpected," says interior designer Linda Woodrum, who worked with house planner Jack Thomasson to carve out a relaxed casual living space that would accommodate gatherings, large and small.
Twin mattresses, nestled atop custom-crafted platforms, provide napping and sleeping space. Anchored into the ceiling, beds are designed to gently sway as coastal breezes blow through the ground level space.
All-weather bedding and bolster pillows ensure durability and comfort.
Grommet curtains, fashioned in a Sunbrella fabric, frame the playspace. Artwork and decorative accessories lend a lived-in, comfortable look.
All-weather woven wicker-style furnishings provide space to read, reconnect with friends or watch TV.
A collection of black-and-white photos taken by carpenter David Brown are framed in rough-sawn cypress, which is coated in a translucent paint stain. Pictures, captured around Bluffton and Hilton Head, South Carolina, are protected under Plexiglas.
A sisal-style rug sections off the room's social and sleeping area, which nests adjacent to a fun playspace defined by a Ping-Pong table and flat-screen TV.
The ground-floor playspace is designed to make rainy beach days breeze by.
The professional-quality high-density fiberboard table-tennis table comes with four rackets and two dozen balls. The metal arched base is both architecturally compelling and stable.
Paddles turn artwork when displayed in a custom-crafted paddle bar.
Doors lead from the semi-conditioned playspace to the outdoor grilling and dining area.
