Each year, HGTV challenges itself to raise the bar for the upcoming Dream Home. The location, surroundings and home style are all expected to be increasingly more inviting and spectacular year to year.

For HGTV Dream Home 2005, house planner Jack Thomasson looked deep in the heart of Texas for a stunning home in surroundings unequaled in Dream Home's nine year history.

The home design is based on creating a resort-style home that maximizes the site characteristics, draws from its environment and is responsive to the rich heritage of East Texas. Architecturally, the home utilizes forms and materials that are prevalent within East Texas — a simple metal roof, large overhangs, operable windows and natural stone provide outstanding resistance to the natural elements and passage of time.

HGTV searched the U.S. for another dream-worthy location, and we believe we've found it in Texas. The home we're building on Lake Tyler includes many of the attributes that research has shown us people are looking for in a dream home. Couple that with world famous Texas hospitality, and we believe we have a winner.

The positioning of HGTV Dream Home 2005 will allow its longest side to face the prevailing winds, and numerous French doors and windows provide cross ventilation that opens the house to gentle breezes.

The home will contain over 5,000 sq. ft. of living area (almost 2,000 sq. ft. more than HGTV's largest Dream Home to date), with special thought devoted to the many activities one can enjoy with a home such as this. The core of the house features a large, Texas-style living, dining and cooking area. Ample porches are provided on the lake side of the home, as well as the entry.

The master bedroom, or Honeymoon Suite, has been separated from the main portion of the house with a screened porch that houses a hot tub and outdoor fireplace. Once secluded within this special retreat, the winner of HGTV Dream Home 2005 can enjoy its private juice bar or computer nook, a lush master bath with a dramatic shower, and of course, a sleeping area with incredible views of Lake Tyler.

On the ground level of the home, there is a television/game/workout room and a second bedroom with an attached bathroom. The garage has been created to accommodate SUVs and recreational vehicles. A treehouse-style bedroom with a full bath has been planned for those adventure-seeking kids at the highest point of the house.

For guests of the lucky winner, a secluded guest suite is provided on the second floor of the dock house, with a west-facing porch that will frame East Texas sunsets. The guest suite will be connected with a stairway to a lower level living space that will contain a kitchen, dining and seating area. This lower floor will have doors that swing away from view to provide an outdoor feeling on the lower level and to fully integrate it with the deck.
