Mark and Derek's Excellent Flip
To correct a maze-like front entrance and choppy floorplan, Mark and Derek opted for removing walls and opening up some spaces. The structural alterations made way for this striking new entryway leading to a masssive great room and adjoining kitchen.

In the main part of the house, all doors and windows were replaced. The larger windows and sliding doors let in plenty of natural light and brighten up the space as seen here in the remodeled living room.

The kitchen was completely made over with new cabinetry, modern appliances, updated lighting and a new kitchen island.

Brilliantly colorful art hung in the foyer makes a strong and immediate visual statement against the bright white walls and muted blue of the painted woodwork.

Throughout the house, old flooring was removed and replaced with new oak hardwood creating a more unified look.

From a design and construction standpoint, the renovation was divided into four distinct phases: the main living area, the front rooms, the home exterior and the master suite.

In the living room, a light color palette helps bring a bright and open feel to a space that formerly felt dark and closed in.

Large sliding glass doors bring plenty of natural light into the interiors and allow for striking views onto the newly landscaped backyard.

The backyard was opened up by removing a dated terrace, trellis and railing. New siding and stucco help dress up the home's exterior.

The kitchen renovation includes a new island, quartz countertops, custom Shaker cabinets, stainless appliances and subway tile for the backsplash.

In the master suite, the bedroom opens directly onto both the walk-in closet and spa-style bath.

To help meet budget, Andrew suggested salvaging the original shelving in the walk-in closet and undertaking a more modest improvement by simply repainting and upgrading with new hardware and new oak flooring.

A dated '70s bathroom was updated to create this luxurious new space with custom cabinets, granite countertops and dual vanities.

An old hot-tub was removed to make room for a new custom glass-enclosed shower and spa-style bathtub.

In addition to cosmetic improvements, the bathroom reno included replacement of the old galvanized pipes with copper. Leaving old, outdated plumbing in place could have reduced the selling value of the house.

Design Debut
Derek Hough and Mark Ballas can now add home improvement and renovation to their skill sets. After purchase price and renovation costs, they were able to realize an equity proceed of nearly $300,000 on their first house flip.
