The Brady Bunch House Renovation Revealed - Part 2: Mike's Den & the Kids' Rooms

In the second installment of A Very Brady Renovation, Mina and Karen of Good Bones and Jasmine Roth of Hidden Potential join forces with Barry Williams, Mike Lookinland, Eve Plumb and Susan Olsen (aka Greg, Bobby, Jan and Cindy) to re-create Mike Brady's den, the upstairs boys' and girls' bedrooms and the Jack-and-Jill bath.

For this phase of the restoration, Mina Starsiak and Karen E Laine of HGTV's Good Bones teamed up with Mike Lookinland (aka Bobby Brady) and Susan Olsen (aka Cindy) to re-create the kids' upstairs bedrooms. Bringing Work Home

Blast from the Past. Meanwhile, the downstairs team for this phase of the reno includes HGTV host Jasmine Roth (Hidden Potential), Barry Williams (aka Greg Brady) and Eve Plumb (aka Jan) who worked on demolition of the home's original kitchen to supplant it with a perfect replica of Mike Brady's den and home office. (Does this photo look vaguely familiar? If you're a serious Brady Bunch fan, it should.)

Warm and Fuzzy

HGTV host Karen Laine can't resist the opportunity of a photo op with the stuffed giraffe that Brady fans will remember from the girls' room.

Mina, Karen and Susan take a breather from work on the forms for the concrete foundation for a new addition to the home's original floor plan. The new addition at the rear would add about 2000 square feet to the home's floor plan.

Mina and Karen work on removing a portion of the old roof to make room for the addition at the rear of the house. The new addition will enable the creation of the full-sized Brady kitchen and family room on the lower level.

Mina and Karen, who have no fear when it comes some serious roof work, strike a classic Good Bones pose.

Before the Renovation

Since the home's existing floor plan had to be altered to allow for the open-concept living area of the Brady interiors, the home's existing kitchen would essentially be gutted to allow for the creation of Mike's den.

Once completed, the re-created den will actually encompass portions of three existing spaces in the actual home's floor plan — the kitchen, an adjacent hallway and portion of the existing living room.

Kitchen Demo

Prior to the kitchen demo, Barry and Jasmine check out the vintage home-intercom system. Like many of the artifacts from the original home, components of the old intercom system were salvaged and repurposed. The intercom components were used to create a bluetooth speaker system with a vintage mid-century look. Find out more about it and get DIY instructions here.

Fashioning '70s-Vintage Wallpaper

Because the floor had to be dug down and lowered to create the sunken feel of the den, the existing window would have been conspicuously high in the space. The raised seating area at the end of the den was created to give the overall space better proportion.

Jasmine and Barry worked diligently to re-create Mike's den down to the most minute details.

The wall-to-wall carpet in the den is actual vintage carpet that had never been used. The designers located the "new old-stock" carpet, which is no longer made, stored away in a warehouse.

Mike Brady was an architect. So this was where he had his drawing table, where he made plans, where he revised plans. This is also where we [Brady kids] got our life lessons.

Barry spent a lot of time in here. And he was definitely, of all the Brady kids, the one that had themost life lessons in this room. So, I know this is an important room to him, and I just hope I did it justice.

Upstairs Hallway

The upstairs hallway provides access to the girls' and boys' bedrooms and Jack-and-Jill bath. You will notice in the photos that follow that there are no 'before' photos of the upstairs rooms. The actual house was a split-level ranch with no second floor. The upstairs was added on to re-create the layout of the home as depicted in the Brady interiors which were actually shot on sets at Paramount Studios.

Mina and Karen worked hard to not only recreate the layout of the Brady girls' bedroom, but to decorate and stage it to be an exact visual match to what was seen in the original series.

"It's so pink," said Susan Olsen when she first saw the girls' bedroom. "It's as vibrant as TV!"

The stuffed giraffe, Daisy, was one of the vintage items crowd-sourced from Brady fans as part of a nationwide scavenger hunt. This one came from a fan named Vicky who had owned it since she was a child.

"Hardcore Brady fans will know what season this is from," said Mike Lookinland when he saw the re-created boys' bedroom. The exact decorations seen in the re-creation match up with the early episodes of The Brady Bunch, season 2.

Vintage replacements for the bunk beds in the boys' bedroom could not be located, so replicas were built by carpenters.

Even the placement and alignment of the patterns on the wallpaper in the bedrooms is an exact match to the way it was seen in the show.

The gray paneled wall in the boys' room opens onto the Jack-and-Jill bath that the brothers and sisters all shared.

Detail is all Brady-authentic, down to the pink and blue towel sets and the pink sponge-rollers on the girls's side vanity.

The vanity cabinetery in the bathroom, because it's unlike any being mass produced today, had to be custom built to create that authentic Brady look.

The visual elements seen in the original show are all present, as well as new additions like the tub-shower that make this a functioning bathroom.
