A Very Brady Homecoming

With the restoration of the Brady house complete, Brady Bunch cast members and members of the HGTV family pose for a picture as they are presented with a certificate of recognition by Kevin James, director of the Office of Film and Television Production with the Los Angeles mayor's office.

Left to right, Susan Olsen, Mike Lookinland, Eve Plumb, Christopher Knight, Maureen McCormick, Barry Williams, Kevin James and HGTV hosts Jonathan Scott, Karen Laine, Drew Scott, Leanne Ford, Jasmine Roth, Steve Ford, Mina Starsiak and Lara Spencer.

Building Brady

Part of the final stretch of the Brady house restoration, Mike Lookinland and Jasmine Roth team up to work together on the Brady master bedroom, including the ornate room divider that was part of Mike and Carol's room.

Property Brothers Drew and Jonathan Scott work with Maureen McCormick and Chris Knight to create a new window for the master bedroom.

Building Brady

While searching for vintage salvage pieces for the Brady restoration, Mike and Jasmine took time out to create this impromptu art installation.

Building Brady

Maureen McCormick and Lara Spencer hit up the antique malls in their quest for Brady-esque '70s artifacts. Here they found a table lamp, vintage camera and world globe for Greg's attic bedroom.

Barry and Jasmine remove old wood flooring in the basement space that will become a replica of Greg's attic.

Building Brady

Barry and Jasmine work together installing wood paneling Greg's "attic" bedroom. The reclaimed wood planks were salvaged from some of the earlier demolition in the original home.

Pretty In Pink?

Mike Lookinland's initial reaction to the original wallpaper in the first-floor bedroom is understandable. The intensity of the pink toile print is practically blinding. This is the space that will ultimately be transformed to re-create the Brady master bedroom.

Building Brady

Since the floor plan of the master bedroom will be revised somewhat, Mike and Jasmine get busy with demolition of one of the original bedroom walls.

Mike and Jasmine work to create the lower cabinet portion of the master bedroom's familiar room divider.

The home's original master suite, seen here, was completely reframed to transform it into a replica of Mike and Carol Brady's bedroom and bath.

In order to match the floor plan of Mike and Carol Brady's bedroom the interior door seen here on the right would need to be closed off.

A portion of this wall is what gets demolished and removed to make way for the entrance to the Brady master bath.

Removal of the old wall also opened up space for the creation the screen room divider, his-and-hers closets and Carol's bedroom vanity.

Building Brady

Jasmine and Mike worked to create a precise replica of the brick feature adjacent to the screen divider in the master bedroom. The brick was later painted white to match what was seen in the Brady set.

Designer and Brady build manager Dylan Eastman was instrumental in re-creating the shoji style screen that was part of the master suite's room divider. "The pattern for the screen wall that goes in the master," he said is super important to the room because it's right behind the master bed, so it was in [so many] shots." Mike and Jasmine built the frame for the screen and Dylan was able to replicate the look and pattern of the rice-paper screen that was seen in the oriignal series.

Maureen and Lara found a bedside table lamp that was an exact match to the one seen in the original series at a local antique mall. Lara was able to find a second one via an online auction. The vintage lamp was manufactured by Laurel Lamp Company which made midcentury style lamps and light fixtures which are highly sought after today.

The heart paperweight on the vanity was provided by Barbara Chase, the daughter of Florence Henderson who played Carol Brady. Florence's birthday was Valentine's Day, and she always collected heart decorations and mementos.

Building Brady

Barry Williams and Jasmine Roth work on re-creating some of the details in Greg's attic bedroom, including the very Brady-era beaded door curtain.

Greg's Attic, Before

Greg Brady's "attic" bedroom was, in fact, re-created in what had been the home's basement rec-room. In the planning phase for the reno, it was determined that adding on an attic to acommodate the replica of the attic bedroom would have altered the familiar street-view and roof line of the house. Since it was important to keep the familiar exterior profile exactly as seen on the show, the floor plan of the attic bedroom was re-created in this space.

Greg's Attic, After

Greg's attic was only seen in the Brady Bunch series in later-season episodes, but it is one of the spaces that is most memorable and resonates most strongly with fans of the show.

Greg's Attic, Before

To convert this space to make it visually resemble Greg's bedroom, the existing stairs would need to be removed and existing entry closed off. The existing small bathroom on the right would be removed as well.

Greg's Attic, After

A new hidden staircase on the right now leads to the upstairs master bedroom, and new concealed steel beams were added to provide structural support for the stairs and master suite. The old support beams are now concealed and the ceiling is altered to mimic the look of a pitched attic ceiling. The roof-board ceiling is actually lumber reclaimed from the basement's original wall paneling.

The twin bed with wooden headboard and room divider, along with the beaded curtain, helps reinforce the room's classic '70s look.

Greg's Attic, Before

In the home's original floor plan, the basement level had once been a carport and was later converted to a rec room.

Greg's Attic, After

The room's original sliding glass doors and windows have been covered over to help disguise the appearance of a lower-level space. Artificial rafters were added and the flat portion of the ceiling was painted brown to help reinforce the illusion of an attic space.

Greg's Attic, Before

Greg's Attic, After

Lara Spencer and designer Dylan Eastman worked diligently to replicate the exact look of the patchwork rug in Greg's attic using carefully selected vintage-carpet remnants.

Greg's Attic, Detail

The window behind the bed is actually a fake window that was made to look like the prop window that was part of the set of Greg's bedroom. The treetop scene in the faux window help's foster the impression of an attic space. Jasmine and Barry worked together to build the window frame and attach the photographic image to create the "outdoor" illusion.
