California Modern Farmhouse Kitchen

This home, once decorated in 80s colors like bright pink, cried out for a makeover. Designers drew on the owners' SoCal roots to update it to California modern farmhouse style with Scandinavian-inspired elements. The galley kitchen felt closed off, so the changes included knocking down a wall and building an addition to accommodate larger kitchen and a new breakfast nook with a pantry.

White Kitchen Walls and Cabinets

Pendant lights, new windows and white walls and cabinets open up this kitchen and make it feel bright and airy. Simple, wood stools with metal frames add to the modern farmhouse decor.

Subway Tile Backsplash

Extra-long subway tiles were used to make a beautiful backsplash for this white kitchen. A wooden cutting board and round tray added elements of natural, Scandinavian style.

Farmhouse Style Flooring

Wider floorboards in farmhouse style and fresh coats of white and grey paint brightened this kitchen and eating area. Several windows and a kitchen door were also added, along with a lot of new millwork on storage spaces.

Kitchen Greenery and Flowers

Scandinavian decor uses greenery and flowers to add life and color to rooms like this white kitchen. Flowering branches, leafy stems and simple arrangements in black, white and clear containers keep the look fresh, clean and sophisticated.

Breakfast Nook and Pantry

As part of this home's makeover, the original kitchen floorboards were repurposed to make a pantry for the new breakfast nook. This practiced sustainability while keeping a sense of the home's history for its owners.

Black and White Color Scheme

A black and white Scandinavian color scheme makes this breakfast nook and the adjacent kitchen look larger and more spacious than they really are. A few leafy, green stems and white blooms work well with this palette. A contemporary chandelier illuminates the space.

Scandinavian Design Elements

This California modern farmhouse kitchen includes elements of Scandinavian design, such as natural lighting, white walls, muted colors and wood accents. It feels practical, minimalistic, sleek and comfortable.
