Backyard Whimsy

Chances are you have heard of a man cave, but have you heard of a she shed? When my mother, Fredda Perkins, heard about it, she ran with the idea. She built this fun structure in the rear of the large backyard of my childhood home, a 120-year-old pink Victorian.

Off the Beaten Path

The flagstone pathway goes around the entire building. The path is lined with bowling balls at some points and is peppered with colored marbles and smooth pieces of slab glass.

Vintage Details

The curly corbels along the front of the she shed, as well as the door, are vintage pieces found at a flea market in East Texas.

Trick Brick

The outside of the structure appears to be brick but is actually a pressed metal. The eccentric colors were chosen from the “whoops” bin at the hardware store where prices are always less than half.

The Sound of Music

The sound of running water is a constant around this she shed due to all the handcrafted water features. This one was made with repurposed musical instruments and a cattle feeding trough.

An Artful Mosaic

Fredda is a prolific creative constantly exploring new mediums in her she shed. Her mosaic-covered yard art can be spotted throughout the yard.

For the Love of Junk

Never one to leave a good pile of junk behind, Fredda is constantly upcycling. My father collects vintage cars so she often finds herself at swap meets for car parts.

A Shed With a View

All of the windows in the she shed were salvaged. The two trapezoid-shaped windows at the top were found in the attic of the main house.

Room for All

Always ready for neighbors to stop by or grandchildren to come visit, there is plenty of seating around the she shed. The inside might look like a "craftastrophe" but the outside is whimsical and welcoming.
