Modern Yet Rustic Holiday Decor
The simple structure of this tree gives it a modern, architectural feel maintaining its rustic charm.
Gathering the Materials
You will need: 2 medium tomato cages / 3 1/2 inch upholstery webbing (at least 4 yards) / medium gauge wire / wire cutters / ornaments / and a tree topper
Cleaning the Tomato Cages
Make sure your tomato cages are clean and free of tags. Paint them if you wish or leave them plain. Rust could add an interesting element to the look, but if your tomato cages have rust and you don’t want it, brush it away with a wire brush.
Fastening the Tomato Cages
Stack the tomato cages together and twist them so that the vertical wires of the top cage are lined up between the vertical wires of the bottom cage creating a more divided grid.
Securing the Tops
Bring all of the tops together and secure them tightly with a few passes of wire. Trim away any excess.
Adding the Webbing
Starting at the bottom and working your way around and up toward the top, pinch the webbing together and fasten it to the tomato cage with a small piece of wire. For best results, look for a spot where the vertical and horizontal wires of the cage intersect. Continue adding the webbing leaving a bit of billow between each attachment.
Cleaning Up Loose Ends
Use wire cutters to remove any excess wire.
Attaching the Ornaments
Add ornaments to each of the spots where the webbing was attached using wire. To maintain a clean and simple look, stick with the same ornaments.
Adding the Topper
Add a topper over the gathered ends of the tomato cages. Note: you may have to bend the ends a bit with the wire cutters to fit them inside the tree topper.
The Finishing Touches
Trim away any excess wires from the ornaments. Optionally, dress up the look a bit by adding ribbon bows to the tops of the ornaments.
Minimalist Merriment
The clean and simple look of this tree says "Happy Holidays" in a very modern way.
