Farmhouse and rustic decor is all the rage at the moment (thanks Chip and Jo). But, you don't need to pay a small fortune to get the look. Making your own rustic decor is easier than you think. In fact, everything you need to make this twine star can be found at your local hardware store.

Materials

  • garden twine
  • 10 paint sticks
  • wood glue
  • hot glue

Start by gluing two ends of two paint sticks together to form an upside down "V." Repeat this step four more times. You should have five points.

Glue each point to the end of another, forming a five-point star. Let it dry.

Starting at one of the points, put a dab of hot glue onto the point and secure a section of twine onto the wood star frame.

Wrap around the point, securing with hot glue. Work your way to the base of the first point. Don't worry if the very top is exposed. Once you get going, you'll be able to wrap it at the top. Use as much hot glue as needed to secure the twine in place.

When you get to to the base, drag the twine to another top of another point, securing with glue as you go. It's easier to wrap the star from the top of the point down. Repeat for each point.

Once each point is wrapped, it's time to start filling in the middle of the star. Start by wrapping diagonally. It's OK to cut the twine to start a new area to fill. Continue criss-crossing the twine until the middle is filled.

Add a ribbon and display your handmade rustic star on a front door, fence, over a mantle or anywhere you need a touch of homespun design.
