The Top 10 in Sustainability
Have you ever wondered how eco-friendly your city is? Well, look no further: HGTV and LawnStarter have uncovered the top 10 most sustainable cities in the US. The rankings were based on the number of energy-efficient policies and incentives, zero-energy buildings, green commuters and community-supported agriculture. Read on to see if your city made the list.
10. Seattle
LawnStarter looked at 200 of America's largest cities to determine the most and least sustainable. A city known for its tech industry and quality of life, Seattle ranked No. 10.
9. Salt Lake City
Salt Lake City is ranked as the ninth-most sustainable city in the US. It is also the fourth ranked city in the country (Atlanta is No. 1) for the most alternative-fuel stations per 100,000 residents.
8. Oakland, California
A famously progressive city on the east side of the San Francisco Bay, Oakland ties with Portland, Oregon, as No. 5 on a list of cities (San Diego is No. 1) with the most zero-energy buildings.
7. San Diego
The city of San Diego ranks No. 1 for having the most zero-energy buildings in the US.
6. Rochester, New York
Rochester is ranked third among the cities with the most incentives and policies supporting renewables and energy efficiency.
5. Baltimore
The fifth most sustainable city in the country, Baltimore also ranks as the top city for having the most incentives and policies supporting renewables and energy efficiency, according to LawnStarter.
4. Washington, DC
Our nation's capital has the third-highest share of workers who walk, bike, carpool or ride public transit to work.
3. Sacramento, California
Number three in overall sustainability, Sacramento is also ranked number two in the US in a list of cities with the most zero-energy buildings, according to LawnStarter.
2. Boston
America's second most sustainable city, Boston is also a beacon for history and culture.
