How to Get Kids Organized

The earlier that children learn organization, the better the chances are that it will become second nature to them. Easier said than done? Try these tricks.

1. Keep it simple when setting up an organizing system for children. Establishing one place for like items will make it easier for kids to remember. Put all the toys under the bed, all the paper in a color-coded container, etc.
2. When siblings share a room, it's imperative that each child has a sense of his own personality and space. Have each child pick a color he likes and shop for storage bins and boxes in that color.
3. When a child gets a new toy, one of the old ones has to go. It keeps the toy count to a minimum and teaches the child the value of decision-making and efficiency.
4. If you don't have a lot of floor space, look up! Look for taller units that use the height and wall space of the room.
5. When space is at a minimum, bring in multifunctional units such as beds with drawers or stools with storage. Every inch counts.
