Handmade sleeves or holders for candy canes have been around for generations. This sweet throwback holiday craft is quick, easy and fun for kids of all ages to make using just felt and glue.
By: Marian Parson
- medium gray, light gray and pink felt quarters
- all-purpose or fabric glue
- hot glue gun and glue sticks (optional)
- craft eyes
- small pink pompom
- black permanent marker
Draw and Cut Out Mouse Shapes
Using a permanent marker, draw a teardrop shape about 4" long on the medium gray felt then cut out (Images 1 and 2). On light gray felt, draw 2 circles about 3/4" in diameter (Image 3). Draw smaller circles, about 1/2" in diameter, on pink felt.
Apply a small amount of fabric glue to one side of a pink circle (Image 1). Center pink circle on top of larger light gray circle and stick pieces together. Repeat with second pink and gray pieces. Apply dab of glue to one corner of layered circles and pinch together to create an ear (Image 2). Tip: Hold pinched shape in place with a clothespin while glue dries.
Pinching Felt to Make Mouse Ears
Center pink circle on top of larger light gray circle and stick pieces together. Repeat with second pink and gray pieces. Apply dab of glue to one corner of layered circles and pinch together to create an ear. Tip: Hold pinched shape in place with a clothespin while glue dries.
Attach Ears, Eyes and Nose
Use all-purpose, fabric or hot glue gun to attach ears, nose and eyes to felt mouse body (Images 1-3).
Create Candy Cane Sleeve
Pinch felt mouse together under the ears; apply a dab of preferred glue between pinched layers of felt and hold until dry (Image 1). This pinch will create the mouse's head and hold one end of the candy cane. Cut a small rectangle (approximately 3/4" x 1-1/2") out of medium gray felt and glue two short ends to bottom side of felt mouse, leaving a space large enough to fit a candy cane through (Image 2). This will create a sleeve to hold the candy cane tail in place.
Make Mouse Feet
Cut four small mouse feet out of light gray felt. Use a permanent black marker to draw lines on the curved end of each foot to resemble toes (Image 1). Glue all four feet onto underside of mouse body using preferred glue (Image 2). Allow glue to completely dry before inserting candy cane (Image 3). Tip: To personalize this project, have each family member choose unique colors of felt for their mouse and even add their name or initial to the mouse with a permanent marker. Accessories can also be added like Santa hats, bows, sequins or glitter.
