Design a Wow-Worthy Focal Wall

"This is actually one of my favorite rooms in the house," said designer Tiffany Brooks of HGTV Smart Home 2019. A focal wall is created behind the bed in this master bedroom using black-stained flat wood. An upholstered headboard with a wood frame anchors the bed while a mismatched dresser and side table create bedside tables.

Be Playful With Eccentric Art

Contemporary gothic charm energizes this dramatic dining space. A painted black wall is the perfect blank canvas for eccentric portrait art while butter-yellow barrel chairs pop against the room’s dark background.

Make a Dramatic Entrance

An inset geometric tile pops against light-gray wood flooring in the entry of HGTV Smart Home 2019. Old World-style light fixtures in a brass finish pop against a dark-gray ceiling while the gallery wall gets a refresh with a mix of framed photographs on custom shelves.

Carve Out a Space for Collectibles

Storage abounds in this striking library reading room. Navy-and-white-upholstered furniture plays off the dark walls, while floor-to-ceiling drapes in a calm cream tone elevate the space and draw the eye upward, bringing a voluminous feel to the room.

Have Fun With the Details

Family game night comes alive in this warm and inviting playroom. A wall-mounted Scrabble game creates a fun focal point on the far wall while geometric influence is found from the cube-shaped coffee tables to subtle patterned rug.

Pick a Bold Pattern

Penny tile in a striking navy creates a focal wall in this inviting guest bathroom. A round mirror in a silver frame plays off the globe-style glass vanity lights and echoes the pattern found in the tile.

Add Drama to the Fireplace

Modern lines meet natural textures in this leather-wrapped fireplace with black-and-white tile accent. A black box mantel protects the leather-wrapped chimney from the heat, while subtle neutral tile creates a natural frame around the fire itself. Portraits in a gallery-wall-style arrangement above the mantel and a dramatic chandelier add a gothic element.

Mix-and-Match Design Styles

This breakfast area of the kitchen incorporates Old World style with timeless elegance for a formal tone that still feels inviting. Modern Parson chairs head each end of the table while a traditional church pew creates a bench seat for the table. Bright white cabinets pop against dramatic dark walls.

Create a Curated Look

A traditional church pew in black pops against white cabinetry and provides bench seating in the breakfast area of the kitchen.

Don't Be Afraid of Dark Colors

Dark cabinets with metal pulls combine with dramatic hexagon tiles in black for a contemporary take on gothic style. Smart lighting mirrors bring intelligent design to your morning routine, while potted ferns add life and color to the room.
