The living area, tucked under a bank of 12-foot-tall windows, provides a stunning view of the desert landscape. Furnishings are toned down so all eyes focus on the glorious scenery just steps from the back patio.

A steel-framed leather chair and soft brown suede sofas lend a clean, tailored masculine touch. "We picked the fabric for the sofas, and then we discovered that the gravel color was a paler version of the sofa leather. It was meant to be," says interior designer Linda Woodrum.

Spiked green grass, bursting forth from a natural clay bowl, echoes textures featured in the landscape design.

An 8-foot-tall painting by Kevin Tolman is a feast for the eyes in the great room. Chosen to balance the cool tile in the kitchen, the piece complements the home’s modern styling. “The contemporary design of the house decrees that you keep it simple and clean,” says Woodrum.

A bouquet of sunflowers adds a pop of color in the great room. “You are looking for that kind of hot color because you have the neutral fabrics and the sisal rug,” adds Woodrum.

A happy tablescape pays tribute to the sunny Southwest location with a bowl of chili peppers, history and contemporary Southwest art picture books and antique Native American baskets. “I always start out and keep taking things away and adding things until I feel like I have it right,” says Woodrum.

A hand-planed buffet table – topped with decorative pottery and light sculptures by artist Suzanne Derrer – connects the great room to the kitchen area. "We originally had lamps on that table and I thought, 'My gosh, let’s do something a little more fun.' They suited that space," says Woodrum.

Crafted of rice paper and aspen branches, the sculptures lend a light and airy aesthetic.

A wall of windows separates the living room from the back patio, where a gas fireplace serves as a focal point for both spaces.

Pillows add a pop of turquoise color and keep the eye roaming around the room. The dark leather chair grounds the space and complements the dark kitchen island.

A Native American basket – a vintage find – serves as the room’s conversation piece.

Interesting textures and prints, including houndstooth, Greek key and cow-hide, add interest in a space dominated by neutral fabrics and surfaces.

Tongue-and-grove pine ceilings extend into the living space, which is illuminated by recessed lighting and industrial-style floor lamps.

Additional seating is provided in the adjacent kitchen area, where the island serves as a party hub for large gatherings.
