Beach Bungalow Gets a Coastal Chic Makeover

This original 1920s Craftsman had gorgeous bones, but its throwback interiors and tiny footprint didn’t fit the energetic young family that calls it home. After three years of work, the addition of a master suite and brand new kitchen and a floor-to-ceiling coastal chic makeover, it’s now full of breezy California charm.

Craftsman Contemporary Redesign Is a Sweet Success

This sweet 1920s Craftsman bungalow got a face-lift as part of an extensive redesign. Exterior improvements include attractive new paint colors and the addition of a vertical shiplap siding at the roof line to add height. The porch feels expanded by exposing the roof vault and swapping out the original formidable pillars to smaller modern alternatives. Landscaping modifications include the new paver and gravel path, expanding the beds in front, which are now populated with low plantings to reveal and frame the home.

BEFORE: Kitchen

The honey-toned wood on the floors and cabinetry in the original kitchen stifles the space.

Bright and Beautiful Galley Kitchen

The redesigned galley kitchen is a bright and beautiful update with white shiplap walls, light maple flooring and bright white counters. Shaker-style cabinetry in a muted gray is embellished with satin gold drawer pulls. High-end stainless appliances include a wine fridge.

Graceful Galley Kitchen With Warm Accents

Pale wood plank shelving offers open storage against a white shiplap backdrop. A pair of windows assists the French patio doors and vaulted ceiling to keep the galley kitchen bright and open.

Floating Plank Shelving for Attractive Display

Floating plank shelves in a pale wood punctuate the gray-and-white kitchen, offering up a touch of warmth.

Face-Frame Shaker Cabinets in Graceful Galley Kitchen

The kitchen's face-frame Shaker-style cabinetry is painted a muted gray, presenting a pale beachy palette for the calm and inviting space.

Shiplap Surround on Range Hood a Tasteful Choice

A custom range hood surround in white shiplap works beautifully with the shiplap backsplash. Face-frame Shaker-style cabinetry is beautifully accented with satin gold hardware.

Face-Framed Cabinetry Offers Pantry Storage

The French-doored refrigerator is nestled in a wall of tall cabinetry, making the most of limited space by providing a pantry.

Sun-Drenched Dining Nook Offers Timeless Comfort

The kitchen's dining nook offers a Scandinavian approach with minimalist Nordic bell pendants suspended from a dramatic pitched ceiling. Stacked windows and the French doors drench the space in light.

Cozy Corner in Dining Nook Perfect for Coffee

This light-filled corner of the dining nook is the spot for cozying up on the bench seat with a book and coffee.

BEFORE: Living Room

The living room before its redesign was desperate for cohesion.

Radiant Living Room Offers Personality Without Fuss

The redesigned living room is soft, radiant and well-balanced. The minimalist Scandinavian style delivers personality without fuss. Light wood windows and flooring, paired with neutral upholstery, white walls and window treatments keep the room open and uncluttered.

Warm Furnishings Add Depth to Light-Filled Living Room

A rattan ottoman and beautiful teak console add warmth to the airy living room, helping to define the space. Original artwork contributes coastal color and a restful vibe.

BEFORE: Bedroom

The bedroom before redesign was small and dated.

Beautiful Bedroom Bathed in White

The use of white paint on the walls, millwork and ceiling enlarges the bedroom to great effect. A beautifully simple, light wood canopy bed ties into the hardwood flooring to warm the room. Modern gold wall sconces — beautiful and functional — add a touch of dazzle to the inviting sanctuary.

BEFORE: Bathroom

The bathroom before redesign was dated and cluttered.

Washed-Wood Vanity Contributes Minimalist Elegance

The bathroom's new washed-wood double vanity and linen closet with flat-face doors and gold pulls contribute both a minimalist elegance and practical storage. Three vanity sconces with white shades provide ample and attractive light for getting ready.

Encaustic Tile Wall Defines Distinctive Bathroom

The subtle gray tile on the walls and floor in a multitude of shapes combined with a single wall of large-format encaustic tile in the shower cleverly defines the shape of the bathroom, adding visual interest without closing it in. Light pours in from the single window above the shower. The shower tower and frameless glass hardware add sparkly gold touches to the clean white palette.
