Kids' Rustic-Industrial Bedroom

Designer Angelica Henry created a fun bedroom for energetic kids that includes fort-style bunk beds, plenty of storage space and a dedicated study area, all with a stylish rustic-industrial vibe.

The young occupants of this room got their dream beds with these clever bunks. Shelves behind each bed are an ideal spot for the boys to showcase trophies, trinkets and toys. A magnetic panel behind the ladder creates the perfect backdrop for the latest original works of art.

What did your clients want?

A shared bedroom with individual desks and a playspace for their energetic children. The main challenge was working all of these items into a limited amount of space. We incorporated rustic materials and elements similar to those used throughout the rest of the home to keep the style cohesive.

What makes this a fun space for kids?

Metal pipes were used as accent elements throughout this whimsical boys' room, creating shelving and a ladder up to a hidden loft.

The bunks are connected with a pass-through area so bedtime stories can be shared. Shelves behind each bed are an ideal spot for the boys to showcase their latest trophies, trinkets and toys. A magnetic panel behind the ladder creates the perfect backdrop for the latest original works of art. In the bathroom we incorporated custom hidden medicine cabinets to store all the necessities out of sight.

How did you create a kid-centric space?

I like to incorporate a sense of lightheartedness, whether in color, details or theme. For example, this space is fun for the boys because they can climb the pipe ladder up to their secret fort and peer back into the bedroom through the “windows.” I also loved incorporating a special display area for their projects and artwork so they can proudly display them for anyone who visits.

What are essential elements for kids’ spaces?

Kids’ spaces have to be functional like any other space in the house, so incorporating the right storage for clothes, books and toys is essential.

What tied the design together?

We custom-painted the alphabet chest of drawers to set the color palette for the space, but the main focal point of the space is certainly the bunk beds.

What are you proudest of?

My most satisfying moment was when the boys saw their bunk beds for the first time. Their eyes got wide and they smiled and immediately climbed up to explore their new playspace. It was truly such a fun moment.

Why did you add a fort to this space?

It was really a part of the design idea from the beginning. The real challenge was to incorporate everything the client wanted, but I think the end result really maximized every inch and made for a great kid-tastic space.

What “hidden gems” are in your design?

Each bunk has a nightlight in the interior. The bunks are connected with a pass-through area so bedtime stories can be shared. They have special little footstools in the bathroom that they can stand on to access the bath sinks. For extra storage I incorporated drawers under the bunks for storing bedding, blankets, etc.
