Green Paint Colors and Curb Appeal Ideas for Your Home

The grass isn't always greener, but your home could be. These eye-catching homes from HGTV Magazine all have one thing in common: the color green. From front doors and shutters to siding and painted brick, these houses are loaded with curb appeal — and we're sharing all the details.

Get inspired to go green by these charming homes, like this Craftsman-style bungalow in Atlanta. The herb-colored siding (painted Rosemary by Sherwin-Williams) was chosen prior to homeowner and designer Amber Guyton moving in, but she didn't want to change it. “It has such personality,” she says. Pink hydrangeas in the beds, planters on the steps and hanging baskets bring pretty pops of pastels.

Pale Green Colonial Home With a Coral Front Door

Location: Glen Ridge, NJ

Built in: 1908

Paint colors: (house) Honeydew, (shutters) Halcyon Green and (front door) Ravishing Coral by Sherwin-Williams

With their home being over 100 years old, homeowners Phil and Lyenda Delp made architectural and decorative decisions to add even more charm to the New Jersey Colonial. "We made the columns by the front door wider in diameter and added decorative molding to make them more interesting," they say. They also used a color wheel to find a high-contrast paint color for the front door. The best compliment: "Our painter has done similar jobs for people who want to recreate the look of our home."

Charming Green Home in Seattle

Location: Seattle

Built in: 1925

Paint colors: Try (house) Baize Green by Sherwin-Williams, (trim) Swiss Coffee by Benjamin Moore and (door) Darkroom by Sherwin-Williams for a similar look.

This stunning house inspired homeowner Blair Carleton to put pen to paper. "I wrote a poem for the previous owners to strengthen my bid on the home," she says. "It was a riff on Sonnet 43, which begins, 'How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.' I listed the things I love most about the house!" In addition to charming elements like the original windows and wood picket fence. Blair installed a glass roof on the trellis over the porch and entry. "In rainy Seattle, you really need a covered area."

The property is on one of Seattle’s popular walking routes, so Blair plants colorful flowers along the fence for all the passers-by, including dusty miller and impatiens.

Green Craftsman-Style Home

Location: San Jose, CA

Built in: 2019

Paint colors: (house) Sweet Basil and (door) Dark Teal by Benjamin Moore

Selecting the home's green color palette began with the porch light. "I started with the orangey-red barn light above the front door, then chose the color for the house," says homeowner Paige Coleman. "There’s a rustic barn on the property, so the barn lights connect this new structure to that." The modern sconces around the windows and doors give off great ambient light without competing with the barn lights, but Paige's favorite feature is the Dutch front door. "It gives the house a fun Mister Ed vibe when it’s open!" Architect Brad Cox helped create a loft space on the second floor, which adds dimension to the front of this new build.

Low plants, like bearberry cotoneaster shrubs, provide shelter for birds, so Paige placed a birdbath nearby. Aloe vera, seen in the planter by the front door, grows best outdoors in zones 9 to 11.

Tudor Revival Home in Deep Sea Green

Location: Kalamazoo, MI

Built in: 1925

Size: 2,016 sq. ft.

Paint colors: (house) Under the Sea and (trim) Super White by Benjamin Moore

Tudor revivals, popular in the 1920s, typically blend a mix of styles. This home has that picturesque half-timbering and also boasts cottage-y elements, like the little front porch and bay window. “We like to sit here and greet neighbors and pets strolling by,” say homeowners Mark Bullock and Chris Taylor. The original cedar shake siding is a fresh twist — Tudors are usually stone or brick. Applying a water-resistant protective treatment every few years preserves the wood.

The curved plant beds have an appealing free-flowing effect. Mark and Chris filled theirs with deer-resistant plants — salvia, stella de oro daylily, coral bells — to dissuade snack seekers. Black-eyed Susan are like rays of sunshine amid the greenery.

A New Look for a Historic Home

Location: Rhinebeck, NY

Size: 1,777 sq. ft.

Paint colors: (house) Rosemary, Sherwin-Williams; (front door) Cottage Red, (porch floor) Ocean Beach and (porch trim) Wood Ash by Benjamin Moore

“This place looked run down when I bought it, with a collapsed porch and mismatched windows," says homeowner Donna D’Moch Warner. "Adding new columns and new windows with grids brought it back to life.” Donna also had the white aluminum siding removed to reveal the original pine boards, which were then restored and painted. The original door was painted red to stand out against the green siding. The brass plaque recognizes the home as part of the Rhinebeck Village Historic District.

Donna lined the house with classic vinca ground cover and porch-height boxwood. As for the pots by the door, they hold plants of differing heights and colors. “I change them every season,” Donna says.

Two-Tone Green Paint on a Cleveland Gem

Location: Cleveland, OH

Built in: 1908

Size: 3,500 sq. ft.

Paint colors: (first story) Artichoke, (second story) Clary Sage, (trim) Dover White and (columns) Downing Sand by Sherwin-Williams

“We admired this local gem for years before we had the chance to buy it," say homeowners Maureen and Brian Powers. "It’s walking distance from Lake Erie, so every summer it feels like a vacation house — but one that we never have to leave.”  Painted taupe, the wide sandstone columns look uniform and still have texture. The door’s large glass inset mimics the shape of the windows along the porch. A clear finish shows off the wood’s rich color.

To keep their Boston ferns alive year after year, Maureen and Brian bring them inside every winter. A mix of containers — each with its own plant combo — dot the front steps. Sweet potato vine and pink geraniums grow in stonelike pots, while yellow begonias, yellow calibrachoa and white lobularia burst from glazed blue pots.

Brick Home Revitalized With Green Accents

Location: Greenville, SC

Built in: 1926

Size: 3,500 sq. ft.

Paint colors: (front door and shutters) Jadite and (trim) Oyster Bar by Sherwin-Williams

“We weren’t crazy about the yellowy brick when we moved in, especially next to the existing faded teal door and shutters," say homeowners Kathleen and Ken Moore. "Repainting them bright green perked up the whole house.” This Georgian-style home has classical influences — a columned portico and half-round pediments over the door and the firstfloor windows.

To play up the house’s neat, symmetrical style, the landscaping is super manicured. Two rows of evergreens include cherry laurel in back and Encore azaleas in front. Tall sky pencil hollies set off the front steps, with a Japanese maple on the far left. A leafy mix in the planters by the front door pop against the light brick, with shades ranging from chartreuse (coral bells) to deep purple (ornamental peppers).

Green Backdrop for a Blooming Front Yard

Location: Sacramento, CA

Built in: 1938

Size: 1,323 sq. ft.

Paint colors: (house) Majolica Green and (front door) Armagnac by Sherwin-Williams; (trim) Ultra White by Valspar

“We were on the fence about buying a home until we found this one. With its cheerful, rustic colors, charming brick path and lively landscaping, it has endless character,” say homeowners Jamie Bolden and Ashish Shantaram. They also adored the existing orange hue of the door paired with the green siding and dragonfly knocker. “Every single time we walk in the door, it feels exciting,” says Ashish.

As for the landscaping, “We barely had to change a thing!” says Ashish. “There are quite a few green thumbs in our neighborhood, and this mix of plants makes our house cool and eclectic. They bloom at different times of the year — there’s always something interesting to look at.”

Cozy Dark Green Siding

Location: Shreveport, LA

Built in: 2017

Size: 1,982 sq. ft.

Paint colors: (house) Ashwood Moss, (shutters and front door) Yarmouth Blue and (trim) White Dove by Benjamin Moore

“I first toured the house mid-construction and I wasn’t sure about the dark green siding, since my previous homes were all lighter. Once I saw it complete, with a blue door and X-railings, I adored how cozy it looked!” says homeowner Mary Ann Bargmann. “I’ve lived here for a few years now, and I still smile when I come home,” says Mary Ann.

Variegated liriope peps up Mary Ann’s yard year-round, and pink drift roses add color when they bloom in spring. She changes up the flowers during the summer: “I have two military sons, so I plant red, white and blue ones.”

Green Stucco Home Florida

Location: Orlando, FL

Built in: 1999

Size: 2,572 sq. ft.

Paint colors: (house) try Sea Glass Green by Glidden for a similar look, (trim) Swan White and (front door) Candy Apple by Glidden

“My late wife, Joan, and I designed this house using our past homes and other homes in the area as inspiration," says homeowner Pat Dougherty. "My favorite thing about it is the big covered porch. I can sit outside even when it’s raining.”  Durable stucco is low maintenance and long-lasting — it holds up well in Florida’s humid climate. The dormer adds a hit of color to the roof, and its window floods the second floor with sun. “I never have to turn a light on during the day,” says Pat.

The mostly green plantings that line the walkway include boxwoods, liriope and variegated schefflera, all surrounded by pine bark mulch. Croton Petra, known for its bright-colored, leathery foliage, sprouts from large and small pots outside the door.

Modern California Home in Teal Green

Location: Huntington Beach, CA

Built in: 1986

Size: 2,250 sq. ft.

Paint colors: (house) Dragonfly by Behr; (front door) try Tricorn Black by Sherwin-Williams for a similar look

The house style is one of a kind. “We call it a postmodern industrial beach house,” says homeowner Mike Jennett. He and his wife, Kim, recently renovated and had new siding installed, which features horizontal planks on the bottom and board and batten on the top. “We didn’t want it to look like anything else in the area,” he says. The roof is black metal, which stands up to the elements. “The salty ocean air around here wreaks havoc on roofing, so we chose a material we knew would last,” says Mike.

French lavender, which smells great year-round, and inch plant are in the bed out front. Spurge grows in the rectangular planter on the wall. Because of Southern California’s dry climate, many homeowners have embraced xeriscaping (landscaping that needs little-to-no water). It often features succulents, native grasses and other drought-tolerant plants.

Three Levels of Gorgeous Green

Location: Essex County, NJ

Built in: 1929

Size: 2,060 sq. ft.

Paint colors: (house) Irish Paddock and (trim and shutters) Pale Bloom by Valspar; (front door) try Emotional by Sherwin-Williams for a similar look

“Our home’s stacked shape drew us in from the curb," say homeowners Danielle and Tom Foley. "It’s interesting yet simple. Since we changed the color from boring beige to mossy green, it looks even better." Two types of siding, clapboard on the lower level and cedar shakes on the upper floors, emphasize the home’s height. The third floor, which contains a master bedroom with an attached office, is a major plus. After 13 years with an off-white door, the Foleys bought a new fiberglass one and painted it red orange to make it stand out against the siding.

The yard gets its cheerful, cottage-like look from a mix of flower types and colors, including red geraniums, white impatiens and orange marigolds. Black-eyed Susan and purple coneflowers are planted closer to the foundation. Attractive celosia in a mix of bright colors — hot pink, red and yellow — burst from the glazed planters that flank the top step.

Inviting Green Home With Southern Charm

Location: Shreveport, LA

Built in: 1920

Size: 3,200 sq. ft.

Paint colors: (house) Rosemary and (trim) Oyster White by Sherwin-Williams

“We fell in love at first sight with this home and its traditional Southern style, though it needed some TLC. We redid the porch and yard — and kept the same inviting green color on the siding,” say homeowners Jeannie and Randall Martin. The couple picked an oak door, stained dark walnut, with a quad of glass panes that echo the home’s many windows. “It may be new, but it has that historic charm,” says Jeannie. They also replaced a tired wood porch with long-lasting brick, which continues in the walkway.

Pine trees used to block the view of the house from the street. “Removing them made a huge difference in our curb appeal,” says Randall. Beds of red, pink and white begonias are a happy contrast with the green of the other shrubs and the house.

Green and Yellow Paint on a Colonial

Location: Louisville, KY

Built in: 1925

Size: 1,920 sq. ft.

Paint colors: Try (house) Seawashed Glass (trim) Extra White and (front door and shutters) Rayo de Sol by Sherwin-Williams for a similar look.

“This home has been in my family since I was a toddler," says homeowner Rosalind Heinz. "It’s known for the ginkgo tree in the yard, which I tried to pay homage to with the exterior colors.” Every fall, the leaves on the ginkgo tree turn yellow and drop to the ground. Sidelights and a transom frame the hefty wood door, which is original to the house. Rosalind’s parents installed the box-shaped lantern in the ’70s, and it was her dad’s idea to spell out the house numbers above the transom instead of using digits — a fun touch!

The front yard's all-green shrubs include yew, juniper and euonymus.

Tudor Home With Bright Green Door

Location: Des Moines, IA

Built in: 1930s

Size: 2,235 sq. ft.

Paint colors: (windows and trim) Grizzly by Behr; (door trim) Linen Napkin and (front door) Limolicious by Valspar

“The contrast between the swooping roofline and curved door, and between the red brick and light stone, immediately drew us in. Updating the landscaping enhanced all the charm," says Ashley and Mike Shafer of their home in Iowa.

To complement their eye-catching door, they planted bright green hostas mixed with white Annabelle hydrangea and red vinca. Neatly trimmed yews are in keeping with the home’s stately presence. The large stretch of limestone, uncommon on Tudors, amps up the storybook feel. “It’s one of our favorite features,” says Ashley.

Seafoam Green Stucco in Texas

Location: San Antonio, TX

Built in: 1940

Size: 2,800 sq. ft.

Paint colors: (stucco) Seafoam Storm and (trim) Swiss Coffee by Valspar

“We used to live down the street, and we always admired this house’s symmetrical Craftsman architecture and earthy paint colors," say San Antonio homeowners Rachel and Greg Chaney. The multi-lite Spanish cedar door echoes the house’s narrow windows. The same unglazed red-brown tiles that make up the central walkway cover the floor of the porch. (Regular power-washing keeps them looking like new.) Teak chairs don’t take up much space and offer a comfy spot for watching the kids play in the front yard.

A local landscaper revamped the yard using a less-is-more approach. The new greenery by the windows includes aspidistra and Fatsia Japonica. River rocks surrounding the curbside boxwoods prevent soil erosion during heavy rainfalls.

Green Bungalow With a Teal Door

Location: Huntington Beach, CA

Built in: 1934

Size: 1,100 sq. ft.

Paint colors: (house and porch floor) Svelte Sage and (front door) Lagoon by Sherwin-Williams

When homeowner Sheila Sijtsema inherited this cottage from her father, friends told her to sell it to developers because it was so dilapidated. “But I was up for the challenge,” she says. The composite siding is nearly 40 years old, but it gets a fresh coat of paint every few years. Sheila had the redwood floor painted to match the siding and added railings (there were none before). The teal door is a recent upgrade. It used to be dark green, but Sheila wanted to give the house some coastal flair.

Lush landscaping doesn’t have to include grass. Sheila participated in a turf-removal rebate program that gave her money to replace her lawn with drought-tolerant plants. Caribbean fantasy dahlia, mystic spires blue salvia and sonora black-eyed Susan attract birds, bees and butterflies. Petunias on the porch pop next to the cool teal door.
