Cool Blue, Spa-Like Bathroom
Inspired by tranquil blue, an Eastern medicine student transforms an inefficient main bath into a relaxing retreat.
A Cool Blue Retreat
Eastern medicine student Stacy Kon remodeled the inefficient main bathroom of her Los Angeles home into a relaxing retreat every bit as spa-like as the spaces in which she practices one of her passions: acupuncture. A lover of all things blue, Stacy chose a refreshing shade of robin's-egg blue for the walls and ceilings.
Cramped and Cluttered
Prior to her main bathroom’s blue-toned remodel, Stacy's existing bathroom was cramped, inefficient and dark. To give it a spa-like update, she planned to tear out the adjacent closet, increasing the bathroom's width by two feet.
Frosted-Glass Doors
In order to maximize space inside the main bathroom, Stacy decided to have custom, frosted-glass doors installed just outside on a wall-mounted track. Since the doors slide left and right, rather than pushing inward and outward, they allowed for a galley-style set up with the vanity on the right and the soaking tub on the left.

Cool Concrete Floors
The design concept for Stacy's spa-like main bathroom was cool, peaceful serenity. Instead of choosing tile for the floors and soaking tub surround, she had custom, cool gray concrete poured into forms made to size.

A Vanity for the Vibe
In keeping with the modern spa vibe of Stacy's new main bathroom, she had contemporary chrome faucets installed above undermount sinks.
Open Shelving
Concerned with clutter and the possibility of making the modest-sized main bathroom feel even smaller, Stacy decided not to install a bulky medicine cabinet in the center of the double vanity. Instead, she had a custom, contemporary, Asian-inspired open-shelving unit created to house everyday items such as toothbrushes, perfumes and scrubs.
Custom Cabinetry
Keeping surfaces clean is a key part of spa design. When designing the custom cabinetry for the double vanity, Stacy opted for extra-deep lower cabinetry which could house everything from cleaning supplies to spare towels.
A Soft Blue Glow
By opting for frosted-glass sliding doors, Stacy not only added privacy between the main bathroom and bedroom, but she also allowed the natural light to be diffused as it enters the bathroom, creating a soft glow on the robin’s-egg blue walls.
