Make Message Boards
1950s metal trays are transformed in a few short steps. Tap a nail into the tray to mark where you want holes for the cord. Drill holes. If necessary, use sandpaper to smooth around sharp edges.

HGTV Magazine
What’s Old is New
String cord or thin ribbon through the holes; knot the ends to hang. Use magnets to stick papers to the metal boards. If your tray doesn’t hang straight, stick Velcro dots on the bottom corners of the tray’s back (put the other half of the dots on the wall) to help keep it in place.

Recast a Campstool
Turn this folding piece into a cute perch made to hold books, towels, or other light items—not to sit. First, remove the old fabric seat and any staples or nails. Paint the frame; let dry.
From:
HGTV Magazine
Finishing Touches
Using a staple gun, attach new fabric to the frame. This example used a double-sided cotton place mat—it has finished edges, and you can see a pattern even when the stool is closed. Use a hammer to attach a length of nailhead trim (at crafts stores) over the staples. Snip off excess trim with wire cutters. Paint: Cornichon by Martha Stewart Living Paintplace mat: Jennifer Farley Designs ($9, thefarley4.etsy.com) trim: French Natural nailhead ($18 for 10 yards, diyupholsterysupply.com)

Turn a Table Into a Bench
An ordinary coffee table it remade into a cute bench in this DIY project. Paint the table’s legs and sides. Use spray mount or hot glue to adhere a 3-inch-thick piece of high-density foam to a 1/2-inch-thick piece of plywood, both cut the same size as the tabletop. Wrap a piece of batting tightly around the plywood and foam, then using a staple gun, fasten it to the underside of the plywood. Remember: To make sure your new bench will be safe for sitting, choose a sturdy table that won’t collapse if you put weight on it.

HGTV Magazine
Choose a Fun Fabric
Lay a piece of fabric on the ground, print side down. Center the plywood/batting over the fabric, batting side down. Wrap the fabric taut over the batting and staple it to the underside of the plywood, like you’re wrapping a present. Trim excess an inch beyond the staples. Attach the new fabric seat to the tabletop using long strips of super strong Velcro tape. Paint: Tango by Sherwin-Williams. Fabric: Euclid in apricot by Thom Filicia Fabric ($55 per yard, calicocorners.com)
