Nothing but Blue Skies

Can you imagine taking a bath in front of a view like this? Angela Blehm's master bath is the definition of relaxed elegance. The overall palette of her home is so incredibly colorful and vibrant, that the master bath's classic design makes for the perfect sanctuary. Angela achieved a cohesive look within the space by repeating the Benjamin Moore, Cumulous Cloud wall color on his-and-her custom vanities and by adding the gorgeous "York" bathtub from Victoria + Albert. My favorite detail about this space is the repetition and balance of simple shapes. Brass sconces and round pulls are the perfect finishing touches.

Portrait of an Artist

While Angela Blehm’s Georgia home showcases her design aesthetic beautifully, her art studio is where she really gets to let the creativity flow. The bright floral print fabric on the vintage desk chair and the pale blue framed mirror are just a few of the touches that make this studio fun and inviting. Every color, pattern, texture and medium is available in this space. I could barely resist picking up a paintbrush myself!

Step Into Color

This entry joyfully foreshadows what's in store for our journey through the Blehm family home. We're immediately introduced to the family's four central themes: a love of art, bold colors, custom solutions and the use of classic black and white. When the foundation is understated, as is this entry's wallpaper, it creates an opportunity to layer on the fun. Angela worked with a local carpenter to design the statement making red lacquered cabinet. The door style was inspired by Angela's favorite ceramic planter and is in perfect harmony with the iron pickets on the staircase to the left. It is clear the paintings and accessories were all intentionally chosen and placed. The relationship between shapes, finishes and even the primary colors create a beautifully balanced entry vignette.

Dining in Style

This little moment in the dining room reflects how Angela incorporates minimalist principals with colorful whimsy throughout the space. The artwork, painted by her two eldest children when they were just toddlers, is not only a great conversation piece but it also provides just the right amount of soft edges and free-flowing brushstrokes to create a contained chaos, that pairs perfectly with the clean modest lines of the credenza. The mod, architectural yellow chair (another one of Angela’s amazing vintage finds) may be small but it certainly makes a large impact in the space.

Perfect Balance for a Couple

The Blehm's master bedroom strikes the perfect balance of masculine and feminine energies. The palette compliments the rest of the house but is decidedly more subtle and conducive to rest. Angela takes risks in her design, but always makes room for the classics. For example, the blue velvet bed is flanked by red geometric night tables but finished with classic crisp white bedding. Angela admits that she has trouble committing to patterned area rugs, therefore she typically uses white...except for in the master. This one is a rich blue, and a modern take on an animal print. The master bedroom walls are painted in Benjamin Moore, Cumulous Cloud as is the master bathroom. That shared color creates consistency throughout their master suite.

Glam Bedroom

A designer's work is never actually done. For most designers there is always a little something extra that could be done to take our designs to the next level. However, the only thing I could find to do in the Blehm's master sitting area was to adjust the lampshade because the room and its views were flawlessly picturesque. In this space, Angela used one of my favorite hospitality-inspired design tricks. She concealed the drapery hardware behind the crown molding, thereby creating a clean and elevated look. The molding becomes the cornice and the pleated linen drapery opens to expose the outdoors like a movie screen. How's that for drama?! My number one pick in this image is the upholstered bench. It manages to be retro, mod and current all at the same time. Angela is fearless in her use of white furniture and rugs throughout the family home. She's proof that it can be done, not to mention, done with her three young children and pets!

Pink Is In

This stunning vintage white sofa is the one thing I might have tried to run out the door with. The woven upholstery fabric immediately adds an air of sophistication to a wall color that might otherwise come across as juvenile. The sleek curve of the arm that transitions into a fully upholstered leg, housing a floating bench cushion is a work of art with a clear mid-century reference. The only way to address a piece this special is to accent it with sleek black floor lamps, a classic black and white marble coffee table, and graphic drapery fabric by the talented Kelly Wearstler. I really enjoy seeing a successful relationship between the primary colors in the artwork and the tertiary wall color. Angela definitely took risks, but her artistic eye served her well.

Formal but Fun

This formal living room is likely Angela's favorite place to get inspired, primarily because she's always wanted a pink room (Sherwin Williams, Lotus Flower). Her design books, magazines and some of her most prized vintage finds are housed in this space. I love that this room is perfectly balanced and there is a relationship between each of the pieces. The vintage print framed by the pair of lamps, complements the chairs flanking the console, which is grounded by the ottoman. Angela’s use of black and white in this room and throughout the house adds a dose of classic design in spaces with unconventional wall colors and bold abstract artwork.

Down to Earth Dining

The wall color in this dining room, Night Owl by Sherwin Williams, creates an ideal backdrop for more of Angela's original paintings. The triptych, painted on custom-made wood panels, sets the mood for the entire space. Each of the dining elements outside of the artwork are all classic design staples. The Verner Panton chairs and the upholstered settee not only make for comfortable seating, but for an approachable dining experience in a typically formal space.

Boys and Their Toys

Sherwin Williams Iron Ore was used on the walls for both of these boys’ rooms. The Jack-and-Jill bathroom is covered in a cool black and white comic strip-inspired wallpaper. The animated paper adds a sense of humor and a youthful energy that perfectly describes the Blehm boys. Each room also features refurbished vintage pieces that reflect the boys’ individual interests; check out the retro digital clock and Rubik’s cube. My favorite element is the black penny tiled bathroom floor that bridges that gap between the two bedrooms.

Pop Art Princess

This undeniably fun bedroom is a colorful reflection of the budding artist who lives here. Angela's daughter is following in her mother's footsteps and her bedroom/art studio is the perfect space to inspire creativity. Benjamin Moore's White Rain was applied to the walls and trim, then color matched for the drapery and area rug. This design technique creates a gallery-like feel by neutralizing the backdrop, and in this case, allowing her artwork and painterly fabrics to stand out. The crisp white bedside tables pop off of the dreamy wall color and the Pierre Frey fabrics on the pillows and bench are perfect to inspire an artist's imagination. Repeating an additional set of panels and upholstered cornice behind the headboard adds major aesthetic value, style and an element of customization to this bedroom. My favorite element is the cat lamp, having a "cat nap" on the bedside chest.

The Big Reveal

These vintage doors are a clever transition from Angela's daughter's bedroom into her art studio. Angela found the doors, lacquered them and had them put on a track system in order to divide the two spaces. Notice that just beyond the doors in the hot pink studio, the trim color is white as opposed to the tone-on-tone application we've seen throughout the home. Bright white borders on the deep pink tone define the color even more. Another cool trick? When your case goods don't actually match, have them painted the same color simply for continuity. Neither of the tables, chests or dressers in this space were sourced together or at the same time, however the crisp white finish on each makes it look like they were destined to live in the same room.

A Space for Work and Play

This has got to be the neatest family in the country! Angela actually used a white sofa and white rug in the kids' playroom. Her use of white in this room balances the dark walls beautifully and doesn't allow the red to feel too serious or moody. True to form, this playful space features more black and white pattern, however this time on the ceiling with stick on appliqués: a fun way to get kids involved with designing their own spaces. This entertainment/homeschool/play area, also boasts a computer station tucked away into an alcove for homework without the distractions.

Pastel Kitchen

I don't think I've ever been so excited to walk into someone else's kitchen. The Blehm's family kitchen is full of new and innovative ideas. The soft mint-green cabinets were the first breath of fresh air. The color, formerly only used as a complementary shade, has made a comeback and has been reinvented as a neutral foundation color in unexpected spaces. That refreshing color coupled with classic white counters and marble backsplash feels simultaneously nostalgic and brand new. The island lighting is a magnificent display of creativity. Angela Blehm upgraded three simple spheres by designing a custom cage constructed from white oak. It’s a one-of-a-kind solution and an amazing focal point for the kitchen. The natural texture of the wooden cage along with the cabinet pulls, add just enough warmth to make the family's gathering spot feel even more approachable and inviting.
