Designer Naomi Stein

Naomi Stein is the principal designer at Design Manifest, a Philadelphia-based firm that grew out of her father’s business as a contractor. Since her father’s retirement in 2016, Stein continues to lead the family business, designing luxurious interiors on Philadelphia’s posh Main Line, while bringing her own unique blend of modern and vintage style to her home. Located in the Washington Square West neighborhood in downtown Philadelphia, Stein’s condo offers a perfect mix of contemporary design mixed with modern, vintage and global elements.

Open Plan

The living room is an open-plan affair, with a view to the condo’s dining room and kitchen. Stein has opted for a soothing color palette of earth tones in her space, combining various shades of brown, black and forest green against a white backdrop.

Global Patterns

One of Stein’s strengths as a designer is her ability to mix patterns. Here, a side chair reupholstered in Bogolan, or “mud cloth,” from Mali creates an unexpected moment that gives the room a global, sophisticated feel.

Reclaimed Vintage

This stunning dresser is a vintage piece which was restored and repainted by the designer. Its intriguing block pattern contributes to the overall pattern story of the room, contrasting with the more feminine pieces in the room, like the pink gourd lamps.

Textured Wallpaper

Opposite the living area, walls have been adorned in a textured seagrass wallpaper. Stein has a love of vintage finds, and a stunning media piece with its glossy woodgrain continues the textural story in the space.

Art Display

A graduate of Philadelphia’s Moore College of Art, Stein has an enduring love of paintings and photography. Both can be found on the walls of her home. In the living room, above the sofa, a concise selection of black-and-white photography and ink drawings creates a bold visual impact.

Metallics Go Industrial

The kitchen takes a colorful, industrial turn, showcasing Stein's fondness for metallics. The island is topped with an oxidized, steel countertop. The steel top will patina over time. Its rough-hewn texture is also a pleasing contrast to the stainless steel refrigerator and brass elements in the kitchen. Cabinets in a gray-blue tone contrast with the brass pendant overhead. Stein discovered the pair of vintage white bar stools and painted the legs gold for a finishing metallic touch.

Tropical Decor

The dining room has a modern, tropical vibe. Midcentury modern Chinese wishbone chairs surround a white Saarinen tulip table. The green upholstery brings home a pop of color. The shade is echoed again in broad, leafy plants in the window. A zebra skin rug below the dining table enhances the dining area's global sensibility, giving the space the feeling of a faraway resort.

Mixing Patterns

In the master bedroom, Stein's skill at blending patterns is once again on full display. The bed pillows, headboard and sheets all boast unique yet related patterns. A mud cloth bolster and needlework pillow add texture to the bed. And a custom headboard has been upholstered in a deep gray fabric. The neutral heavy color palette weaves the various pieces together.

Master Gallery

This gallery wall is a beautifully curated combination of brightly-hued paintings and black-and-white photography. Paired with colorful flowers and an eye-catching ikat pillow, the arrangement energizes the space while showing off Stein’s creative personality.

Color + Art

Stein's guest bedroom is a comfortable space dominated by a large bed accompanied by a plush bench at the foot. Pops of color come from all sides to define this room including the drapery, bed pillow and rug. The painting on the wall brings together the room’s color palette. Stein created the artwork herself.

Moroccan Headboard

Stein's penchant for global accoutrements continues in this room where a headboard wrapped in a handira (a Moroccan wedding blanket), brings moments of color, metallics, pattern and texture to the room in a single well-placed piece. The piece was found on a trip to Morocco that ended with Stein being wrapped in the blanket at the end of a long evening. It now takes on a special significance as a decorative piece in her home.

Metallics + Wood

Stein makes this small entryway sparkle with a beautiful use of metallics and wood tones for a warm, welcoming space. The oversized mirror helps the cozy nook feel open and spacious. It’s also the perfect place to do a last-minute makeup check before walking out the door.
