All you need is a stencil pattern, a few jars of acrylic or stencil paint, a stencil brush, painters tape, a few paper towels or a rag and you'll be able to make an artistic statement in your cooking space.

If you love patterns—think paisley, geometric, trellis, lattice or other interesting designs—you can create a focal wall in your kitchen by using stencils. Visit a local craft store or search online to find a stencil, and then pick the perfect place in your kitchen to put it. You could even find your favorite family recipe and stencil that on a kitchen wall.

Stenciling can be intimidating at first, but if you prepare properly and do a few practice runs, you'll get the hang of it in no time. Creating a focal wall with stencils can also be a long, tedious process. But the results are definitely worth it and your focal wall is sure to catch everyone's eye as soon as they walk into your kitchen.

Stencils are also a simple and cost-effective way to create a beautiful backsplash. Much less permanent than tiles, you or future owners can easily paint over it when the time comes to switch things up. Find a stencil pattern you like, an inspiring quote, a popular food phrase in a foreign language such as "Bon Appetit," or even names of foods—and use them to create a unique backsplash.

You can even dress up your kitchen cabinets with stencils. While a busy pattern might not work on a bunch of cabinets, you could stencil a pattern along the top of them or just your bottom cabinets to add some visual interest without overwhelming the room. Stencils also look great inside cabinets and armoires.

If you prefer to keep most of your kitchen fairly neutral, but want to include something unexpected, try stenciling your floor. There are tons of potential patterns to choose from, from smaller geometric designs to checkers to big and bold patterns, and they can be used on all types of floors, such as concrete and wood.

Stenciling can take some time and practice, so if you prefer a smaller scale project, consider stenciling a small wall in your pantry. It'll be sure to make you smile every time you go in there to grab something to eat. Other smaller projects include stenciled kitchen tables and stools.

The best part about stencils is that if you like the look you've created in your kitchen, you can use the stencil in another part of your home. When you're ready for a new pattern, just paint over the one you have and start over!
