A Mountain Home With Cozy, Modern Style

Under normal circumstances, Liberty Gould and Jeff Byer might never have experienced living in Park City, Utah: They both work in tech and have full-time jobs in California. But a few years ago, when millions of Americans started working remotely, the couple headed for the slopes and got a taste of life on the mountain. “What we expected to be a several-month stay turned into over a year and Park City came to feel like home,” Liberty says. Then an opportunity to buy a spec house popped up, and they jumped at the chance to own property there. They watched as the 3,500-square-foot house was built and hired designer Raili Clasen to make it a home. She carried shades of green throughout the interior and mixed in sleek materials with subtle nods to the surrounding slopes. “We bought it hoping we’d fill it with family and friends,” Liberty says. The couple has done just that with a steady stream of guests and a permanent one on the way — their first baby is due in February 2025!

The first big decision: painting the exterior black (Wrought Iron by Benjamin Moore). “I love black houses in the mountains,” says Raili. “It makes the pine trees really pop.”

Liberty and Jeff wanted everyone to feel cozy here. (They have 10 nieces and nephews!) Raili created a modern ski-lodge vibe with art from Four Hands, a moss-colored rug from Armadillo (a favorite spot for the family's dog, Ghost) and a subtle strip of checked fabric on the custom bouclé sofa. “I snuck in little bits of plaid as an ode to the mountains,” she says. The light fixture is from Pax Lighting.

To give this space a rustic (but still sleek) look, Raili paired smooth, rift white oak cabinets with rough-hewn oak flooring. “We kept the feeling modern while leaning in to the old, original Park City vibe,” she says. The floorboards are repeated on both sides of the hood, above Heath Ceramics backsplash tiles. The pendant is from Roll & Hill.

Raili’s plan: for every space to have something special and different. Here it’s a woodsy mural from Magic Murals. A Lulu and Georgia checked wool rug and a quilt from Parachute make the room extra cozy. The lamp is from West Elm.

"We wanted the whole house to feel warm and inviting but also fun, so we added a little whimsy to each room," says Raili — even the small ones. This is a teeny-tiny space, but Raili went big on the design with a statement concrete sink from Kast (Liberty spotted a similar one on Raili’s Instagram and fell in love), plus Dutton Brown sconces and hand-painted wallpaper from Porter Teleo.
