Feeling Congested? Whip Up These DIY Shower Steamers

Say goodbye to the sniffles with the help of these essential oil-packed pods you can make in a muffin tin.

Relief can be so difficult to find when you’ve caught a cold. Luckily, these make-at-home shower steamers can help soothe stuffiness through the bright, crisp scents of eucalyptus and peppermint essential oils. Feeling great? Swap out these scents for other favorites: lavender for sleep, orange peel for wakefulness, etc.

What You'll Need

  • muffin tin
  • cupcake liners
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup water
  • your fave essential oils

Prep Muffin Tin

Line a muffin tin with a layer of cupcake liners. This will allow for the shower steamers to mold properly without making a mess.

Create Mixture

In a bowl, combine 1 cup of baking soda and 1/4 cup of water. Mix together until completely combined. There should be no loose baking soda.

Fill Muffin Tin

Use a spoon to scoop an even amount of the mixture into each muffin mold. Once filled, flatten the mixture down into the base of the mold with the back of the spoon. Next, use your fingers to compress the mixture even more firmly into each cupcake liner.

Bake Steamers

Bake at 350 degrees for fifteen minutes. After baking is complete, remove the pods from the muffin tin and place on a cooling rack or a plate. Next, remove the shower steamers from the cupcake liners. Be sure to save the liners for later.

Add Essential Oils

Time to add the oils! Add three drops of eucalyptus essential oil and three drops peppermint essential oil to each shower steamer. Place the disks back into the cupcake liners for storage. When you're ready to use, remove the liner and place the steamer on the shower floor. As the disk dissolves, the steam from your shower will deliver soothing nasal relief from the pod to your nose.

Store Steamers

A mason jar provides the perfect storage solution for these cold-kicking pods. Store the disks for up to a month to use as needed or package and send to a friend for a useful “Get Well Soon” gift.
