Modern Bunk Bed Upgrade Inspired by 'Brother vs. Brother'

A navy and brass color palette and modern accents make this bedroom from Brother vs. Brother feel upscale and sophisticated, and the bunk beds provide extra sleeping space without looking too young.

To fashion a similar space, we started with unfinished wood bunk beds and gussied them up with paint. New bedding, window treatments, rug, lamp and side table complete the look.

We painted a portion of the bed with dark blue (Benjamin Moore River Blue 2057-10) paint-and-primer in one, and then covered the remainder of it with metallic wax finished in antique gold. Using paint + primer reduces painting time and ensures a good coat on raw wood. Buffing the gold wax with a clean cloth ensures a good shine.

We opted for a similar layered look on the re-created bunk beds. A styling trick is to lay the top sheet with the trim facing down, so that when you turn back the sheet, the trim faces up.

It’s often the little things that make a big difference. On this bed, crisp corners and tight tucking ensure the professional look. Accent pillows in contrasting colors make everything pop.

The natural shades are a big part of the upscale look of the inspiration space, so we added bamboo shades to this bunk bedroom. They allow light in while maintaining privacy.

In a departure from the inspiration, we opted for a modern, abstract rug with a cloud-like feel to set a dreamy tone.
