Small-Town Spots to Visit According to HGTV Stars

Add these awesome small-town vacation destinations to your bucket list. They're HGTV-star approved.

Updated on September 07, 2023

It's a no brainer: HGTV stars have great taste. We trust their opinions on most topics — even travel. So, we rounded up their favorite small-town haunts — music venues, home decor stores, coffee stops — from all across the US so you can add them to your bucket list.

Marrs Mercantile,
Centerton, AR

Dave and Jenny Marrs, Fixer to Fabulous hosts, do more than just rescue and renovate old homes in their hometown of Bentonville, Arkansas. The couple's latest side-hustle takes the form of Marrs Mercantile, an upscale boutique located in downtown Centerton, just outside of Bentonville. More specifically, the specialty shop is located in a custom-restored bank building that was built in 1905. The restored exterior now features beautiful gas lamps, a patio and pergola and a play garden for the kids. Inside, patrons will find a carefully curated collection including locally sourced home goods and items from regional artisans — as well as products featured on Fixer to Fabulous. You'll also find a special section known as "Dave's Corner" where you're likely to discover a variety of Dave-approved items, including custom T-shirts and an impressive array of baseball hats, as modeled below by Dave himself.

"We’re really trying to bring the nostalgia back to Main Street with this mercantile," says Dave.

As the couple details on the company's website: "For years we've dreamt of creating a unique place to serve our Northwest Arkansas community. We saw the potential in a 100+ year-old building that originally housed the Centerton Bank. We knew the building needed to be saved and transformed into something amazing."

Find out more about the historic building and its process of renovation on HGTV.com. Watch the full episode on Max or discovery+.

The Shop by Jasmine Roth,
Long Beach, CA

Looking for a California-cool home-improvement inspiration? Look no further than Jasmine Roth, Help! I Wrecked My House.

Her pop-up store — named simply The Shop by Jasmine Roth — was a fan's destination that appealed to just about everyone, especially devotees of Jasmine's special brand of accessible renovation, design ingenuity and home-improvement hacks as featured in her HGTV series. Though the physical shop was temporary — "What pops up must pop down," Jasmine wrote on Instagram — the online version features the same specialty items from the brick-and-mortar store, including décor, lighting, pillows and throws, rugs and workwear apparel. As Jasmine details in her blog, the shop, opened in October 2022, was located at the "2nd and PCH" open-air market in Long Beach, California.

"I really wanted to create a real-world brick-and-mortar space and to connect with people in a whole new way — face to face and heart to heart," Jasmine says. And even though the shop is closed, you can still browse the collections — from Long Beach, California, (where you're sure to catch some stellar beachy-cool home design inspo) or otherwise.

Goodnight Kenny,
Poughkeepsie, NY

As long as we’re on the subject of HGTV-host side-hustles, here’s one associated with some newcomers to the HGTV family, Davina Thomasula and Kristin Leitheuser. Fans know them as co-hosts of HGTV’s Small Town Potential where the couple helps families find, renovate and create their perfect small-town home in New York’s picturesque Hudson River Valley. Davina is one of the area’s most skilled real-estate agents and designers, while her partner Kristin is an experienced contractor and builder.

Before Davina got into real estate, she worked as a bartender in New York City for 15 years. Afterwards, she knew she wanted to open and run a bar of her own — and so, a tiny but welcoming bar in their adopted hometown of Poughkeepsie, New York, was born. That bar goes by the unlikely handle of Goodnight Kenny — which is a tribute to Davina's father Kenny. “As a musician who plays at night, my dad loves to nap during the day," Davina told HGTV in a recent interview. "Goodnight Kenny is what we scream to him every time he goes for a nap."

"I want everyone [at Goodnight Kenny] to feel like family," she said. "We do our takes on classic cocktails, but it's still the kind of bar where you can order a vodka soda or a Jack and Coke, a beer or a shot."

Root House Coffee + Shop,
Pagosa Springs, CO

If caffeine is more your speed — and should you find yourself in Pagosa Springs, Colorado might we suggest Root House Coffee + Shop, the brainchild of proprietors and hosts of HGTV's Building Roots, Ben and Christi Dozier.

Pagosa Springs is located in Colorado's San Juan Mountains, about 35 miles north of the New Mexico border. The population hovers around a whopping 1,500. It's also where Ben and Christi make magic happen with their amazing home transformations. And it's home to their high-end renovation and design firm, Root Design Company, which adopts the Dozier's philosophy of "longing to not simply build a shelter but to transform a place into a story."

And like their design firm, their coffee house is more than just a coffee house: The shop's website describes the enterprise as "a back alley, riverfront espresso and cocktail bar, bakery and lifestyle shop." It has also grown into a local gathering where patrons are encouraged to "bring a friend or make a friend." Besides the sundry of caffeinated, non-caffeinated, sweet and savory treats, the business also includes a boutique featuring decorative accessories, T-shirts, caps and the company's own small-batch roasted coffee beans.

Lamb & Co., Snohomish, WA

Hosts of Unsellable Houses, Lyndsay Lamb and Leslie Davis know how to make a house a home, and at their shop, Lamb & Co., they help you do just that. Located on 1st Street in Snohomish, Washington, the store has beautiful, hand-selected lifestyle and home decor pieces, including items that the sisters have used on the show. Don’t miss out on their other favorite Snohomish stops: grab a drink at Looking Glass Coffee, lunch at Christa’s Sandwichboard and catch live entertainment at The Oxford Saloon.

The Berry Farm,
Bentonville, AR

Another Arkansas gem from Jenny and Dave: Their U-pick farm, The Berry Farm, provides their community with locally grown blueberries and a gorgeous event venue. It also provides educational opportunities for orphaned and at-risk teenage boys in Marondera, Zimbabwe.

The Welcome Inn,
Rogers, AR

After visiting the Marrs’ berry farm, stay in their peaceful getaway located in nearby Rogers, Arkansas. The Welcome Inn is a historic 1870s home they transformed into a charming retreat. The Inn has three ensuite bedrooms that can accommodate up to eight people, along with comfortable living spaces, a formal dining room and luxe kitchen. It's so pretty, you'll want to book a room ASAP — or at least take an online tour.

Laurel Mercantile Co.,
Laurel, MS

Erin and Ben Napier, stars of Home Town, don’t only restore homes in their small town of Laurel, Mississippi, they also have a chic shop, Laurel Mercantile Co., on Front Street. The original store opened in 1901 and served the community for decades. In 2016, the Napiers, along with their best friends the Nowells and the Rasberrys, reopened the doors to offer American-made heirloom wares and durable goods for home and life.

In addition to their own enterprises in Laurel, a while back we asked Ben and Erin to point us in the direction of some of their favorite spots to shop, eat or just relax in their beloved hometown. They came through with an extensive list that included local spots like Cafe Le Fleur, a charming bistro known for, among other things, amazing bread pudding, a personal favorite of Erin's. Then there's Lee's Coffee and Tea, possibly the best place in town to get authentic Southern sweet tea. It's located in historic downtown Laurel and is part of the downtown restoration and revitalization effort that's so important to the Napiers.

And if you're jonesing for some true down-home Southern cuisine, look no further than Pearl's Diner. Menu highlights include staples of the South like fried chicken, mac-and-cheese, black-eyed peas, baked sweet potato and, for dessert, banana pudding. For a more complete run-down of Ben and Erin's favorite local haunts, check the article "Erin and Ben's Guide to Eating Like a Local in Laurel."

Two Chicks District Co.,
Indianapolis, IN

Mina Starsiak Hawk, host of Good Bones, made her dream a reality when she opened Two Chicks District Co. on the south side of downtown Indianapolis. In addition to home decor and furnishings, the shop also has a bistro with wine and beer offerings, as well as yummy snacks and gourmet hot dogs.

Growing Days Home by Tamara Day,
Prairie Village, KS

Tamara Day’s shop, Growing Days Home, stocks beautiful home decor, furnishings and lighting. The Bargain Mansions host and her team put a Monday mood board up each week on Instagram to inspire and show off some of their favorite finds from the store.

Armor Coffee Shop,
Allen, TX

Jenn Todryk, host of No Demo Reno, is like any other hard-working mom, business owner, designer, Instagrammer (we could go on…) — she loves her coffee. She and her husband, Mike, might have taken her love of it a bit farther than most. They own Armor Coffee Shop in Allen, Texas. Her suggestions: try the Cookie Butter Latte and Honey Vanilla Latte.

Bass & Bennett,
Pittsburgh

Restored by the Fords host Leanne Ford loves finding pieces around Pittsburgh to use in her restored homes. Bass & Bennett is one of her favorite haunts to find reclaimed materials and upcycled goods.

FarmHowz,
Gibsonia, PA

Another one of Leanne’s favorite shops is FarmHowz, which has a large inventory of antiques, statement furniture and architectural salvage. Their one-of-a-kind finds bring instant style to any of Leanne’s projects and will to your home, too.

The Corbel,
Jackson, LA

Star of Windy City Rehab, Alison Victoria heads to The Corbel when she needs a statement piece for one of her remodels. If you’re looking for antique doors, reclaimed beams, custom-made furniture and swings, this is your place.

Le Moulin de Provence KD,
Ottawa, ON

When visiting our neighbors to the north, Hilary Farr says a must-stop is Le Moulin de Provence KD. The Tough Love With Hilary Farr star takes her dog, Suki, with her to find the most delicious cookie. The café and bakery have freshly baked bread daily, small batch coffee, and it’s the home of their famous Obama cookie — a maple-leaf shaped shortbread with red icing that Obama bought when he visited the store.

Powell Market, Chattanooga, TN

Designer Nate Berkus of The Nate and Jeremiah Home Project finds gorgeous shops all around the country, and he named Powell Market one of his faves in his Christmas gift guide last year. The space is a lifestyle shop, a photo studio and a hub for community events. But don't worry if you can’t make it to Chattanooga, they have a beautifully curated online store.

Fox & Locke,
Leiper’s Fork, TN

When Christina Hall comes to Tennessee, she stops by Fox & Locke (formerly Historic Puckett’s). The live music venue has shows three nights a week and an open mic night on Thursday. And, of course, their Southern cooking can’t be beat. The host of Christina on the Coast, who splits time between California and Tennessee, declares, "Country life is the best life."

MegMade,
Chicago, IL

Meg Piercy, host of Renovation Goldmine, started on Craigslist selling furniture she had painted, and soon she and her husband, Joe, had turned the hobby into a full-fledged business: MegMade. And the best part? They have a store you can visit in person and online for beautiful furniture, her own DIY paint line, rugs and more.
