Tools and Materials

  • crib
  • circular saw
  • drill
  • Allen key or screwdriver
  • measuring tape
  • drawer pull
  • screws
  • (2) throw bolts
  • 1/2" thick birch plywood

Step 1: Cut Down the Legs

Use a circular saw to cut the legs of the crib down to about two inches tall.

Step 2: Add Locking Mechanisms

Attach a throw bolt to the crib’s post and panel section where you want the opening to be. Place the bolt portion on the bottom rail of the paneling. Repeat for the other side.

Step 3: Remove Screws

You'll need to be able to swing one panel of the crib open from the bottom. Remove whatever hardware is needed to do that. On our crib, we had to use an Allen key to remove two side screws at the bottom of the panel. You may have to slightly loosen the upper screws on the panel to get it to swing open.

Step 4: Close the Throw Bolts

When the screws are removed, secure the panel to the posts with the throw bolts.

Step 5: Add Handle

Measure and mark the center point on the bottom rail of the opening panel. Center your drawer pull over that center point, then mark where to drill the holes for the pull. Pre-drill the holes to prevent the wood from cracking. (We had to hold up the panel to avoid hitting the mattress platform.) Attach the drawer pull with screws.

Step 6: Create and Attach Top Piece

Cut 1/2” birch plywood to the exact size of the top of the crib. Stain or paint as desired. When the finish is dry, attach the plywood to the crib at the four corners. Pre-drill the plywood and then insert screws.

Step 7: Add Mattress

Make the crate comfortable with a mattress and your pet's favorite toys.
