General Jackson Showboat

The Tennessee State Capital Building

Located on Charlotte Avenue, the Capitol is the home of the Tennessee legislature, the governor's office, and is a National Historic Landmark. The Greek Revival architecture was designed by famous architect William Strickland and took over fourteen years to build.

Nashville Public Library

The library's main building downtown is a work of art worth wandering, even if you aren't into libraries. In addition to books, the Nashville Public Library offers a superb line-up of free programming that includes music in its courtyard, puppet shows for children, author talks, films and more. Vanderbilt University

Commonly known as Vandy, this independent university was founded in the spring of 1873 by Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt. Today, this privately supported establishment thrives as the largest private employer in Middle Tennessee.

The Parthenon and Centennial Park

With Nashville’s mild winters, Centennial Park is busy year-round, but summer is its glory season with tons of free programming including big band music and dancing, weekly movies, Shakespeare in the Park, Musicians Corner concerts and all kinds of festivals. (Kami Rice)

The Hermitage

Step back in time at The Hermitage, home of President Andrew Jackson, seventh U.S. president. Located on the outskirts of Nashville, the Hermitage is one of America's largest and oldest historic site museums. (Kami Rice)

First Center for the Visual Arts

The cornerstone of Nashville’s burgeoning visual arts scene, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts opened in 2001 in Nashville's former main post office, a 1930s art deco building. Nashville Farmers' Market

The Nashville Farmers’ Market that got its start on the town square in the early 1800s now resides adjacent to Bicentennial Park. It's open every day, but weekends at the Farmers’ Market often include festivals and other attractions as well as the flea market. (Kami Rice)

Jack Daniel's Distillery

Jack Daniel's Whiskey is renowned the world over, and you can see where the magic is made with an easy drive south of Nashville to the Distillery. The small town of Lynchburg, Tenn., offers other homespun attractions as well. (Kami Rice)

Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park

The Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, in the heart of downtown, commemorates Tennessee's 200th birthday in 1996 and offers a view of the Capitol building. A Tennessee history and geography lesson is built into the park's design.

Nashville Zoo and Gardens

Nestled deep among trees that reflect the animals' natural habitats, the Nashville Zoo at Grassmere delights children and adults alike. Locals often buy annual passes because it's such a great place for strolling and getting their own zoo brood out of the house. (Kami Rice)

The Famous Ryman Auditorium

There’s no substitution for the storied Ryman Auditorium, the Mother Church of Country Music. ABC's Nashville concert scenes and award ceremonies have been shot in this venerated venue, and building owners are so accommodating that there's no need to build a likeness of it on a sound stage.

Schermerhorn Symphony Center

Located in downtown, the Schermerhorn Symphony Center is home to the Nashville Symphony. At the center of the building the Laura Turner Concert Hall seats as many as 1,800 people.

CMA Music Festival

In 2003 Taylor Swift moved to Nashville and has been writing and producing hit songs like "Love Story" and "We Are Never Getting Back Together". For more than a decade she has been a Nashville local and has moved around the area.
