Twist on Nautical
Taking inspiration from the main bedroom of HGTV Dream Home 2021 in Newport, Rhode Island, this Atlanta bedroom was transformed with a fresh, transitional take on nautical style with a rich mix of colors and organic textures.
Before: Plenty of Space
Big on space but lacking continuity, this bedroom was in desperate need of some design work that reflected the homeowner's style.
Touch of Coastal
One of the biggest transformations in the space is the flooring. The wall-to-wall cut pile carpet is barely visible thanks to a 10x12" jute area rug centered in the room. This adds rich, organic texture underfoot and also helps introduce a touch of coastal style.
Extra Lounge Space
Since the room is large in stature, there was plenty of space along its back wall to accommodate a three-seater sofa for some much needed alone time to relax and escape with a book or magazine.
Plenty of Storage
In order to maximize storage throughout the entire space, a pair of three-drawer chests was added, flanking each side of the platform bed. These are more proportionate with the scale of the king size bed and offer plenty of surface for table lamps, books and accessories.
Layers of Bedding
An upholstered platform bed with tailored style adds sophistication to the room. To change up the vibe, there are three different layers of bedding with unique styles: solid navy linen pillows with coastal flair, a classic plaid cotton duvet cover that adds a preppy touch, and a forest green coverlet that's transitional.
Abstract Art
Introducing black and white into any space is a great way to break up a color palette and keep things from looking matchy. Just above the platform bed is a framed abstract print that adds a nice contrast to the forest green walls and the charcoal upholstery.
Before: Lackluster Furnishings
Timeless Pieces
For a touch of rustic style, an eight-drawer dresser was added just opposite the platform bed. The texture really pops against the rich green walls and the space above is ideal for decorative objects, plants and vased flowers. As a nod to Rhode Island, artwork of the Atlantic ocean hangs on the wall above the dresser.
Lived-In Look
The bedroom has a layered, lived-in look thanks to a unique mix of bedding. To allow the looks to be changed up, throw pillows which work well on the sofa and on the bed can be swapped out. Here, the cotton ticking stripe pillows were taken from the sofa to add a nautical touch.
Curated Keepsakes
To take advantage of an empty wall beside the closet, ready-made bookshelves were paired together to create the look of one larger, built-in storage system
Organic Design Details
A repeated element also seen in the main bedroom of HGTV Dream Home 2021 is the use of layered organic textures. The oversized mirror introduces rugged wood grain; the sofa upholstery brings in a beachy linen; the nickel floor lamp and iron occasional table both introduce metal to the space.
Bold Art Choices
To break up the green, graphic art in different shades of blue and gray was added to the corner of the seating area. The varying hues seen in the art help break up the dramatic green used throughout the space and its en suite bathroom.
Before: Lacking Personality
The bathroom needed an overhaul to create cohesion in the main bedroom suite.
Coordinating Spaces
The generously sized en suite bathroom was given a cohesive vibe by using the same palette seen in the bedroom.
Before: Boring from Floor-to-Ceiling
Rich and Dramatic
Similar to the main bedroom of HGTV Dream Home 2021 in Rhode Island, this Atlanta bathroom is outfitted in grays and greens. While the paint color is rich and dramatic, the layering of different grays with accents like the mirror and the sisal rug helps with the overall balance.
Pop of Color
Adding small pops of blue to the bathroom with easily removable elements is an easy way to change up the palette throughout the years with minimal effort and low cost.
Mirror Mirage
If you've got the space above a double vanity, consider adding one extra wide mirror rather than two separate ones. This helps reflect more light around the space and also creates the illusion of more square footage.
