Open Layout Dining Room
Just off the kitchen, the dining room from HGTV Dream Home 2015 is a bright, open area with stylish mixed seating and classic cottage charm.
Charming Mixed Seating
The dining room seating was given a mix-and-match approach in order to keep the space from feeling too stiff. “When you’re playing with a dining table that has six or eight chairs, that’s a lot of legs and a lot of wood,” explains the home’s interior designer Linda Woodrum. “We were trying to find a way to soften all of that wood, so we have this upholstered piece that’s one part of the seating area, two wooden chairs across from it, and two upholstered chairs at the end.”
Centerpiece Size Matters
In order to balance out the room’s high ceilings, Linda chose a centerpiece with plenty of interest and volume.
Coastal Accents
A blue and white palette with a nautical accessory thrown in adds to the home’s subtle coastal vibe. The interior decor was inspired by classic Cape Cod style with an updated twist.
Bright, Airy Layout
A gorgeous white paint job unites the kitchen, dining room and great room, while high ceilings and rustic antique beams show off the home’s bright, open quality.
Classic Lighting
Traditional dining room lighting puts a spotlight on the home’s classic, tailored design.
Open but Intimate
Despite the fact this it is open to the rest of the first floor, the dining room table still feels comfortable and intimate with the use of upholstered chairs, attractive lighting and a calming color palette.
Dramatic Vaulted Ceiling
Though casual and warm, the dining room also possesses a dramatic quality thanks to the soaring ceilings and incredible openness.
Soft Seating
Though the two-story dining room is breathtaking, that openness can sometimes negatively affect the room’s acoustics. Luckily, Linda knew just how to alleviate that issue. “When you have a tremendous amount of volume, you’re looking for ways to help with acoustics,” explains Linda. “So the more fabric you get in the room, the more you help with acoustics.”
Seating for Three
To give the dining table a cozier look, a plush bench sits in for traditional wooden chairs. “We did a banquette that’s upholstered, which could accommodate three children and even three adults,” says Linda.
Custom Details
The dining table has a wonderful gray-wash finish that gives it a delightful, custom look. The wooden chairs were stained dark, almost ebony, for a subtle distinction that blends beautifully with the table.
Light and Bright
Large windows and perfectly-placed skylights flood the dining room in natural light and provide an excellent view of Martha’s Vineyard.
Perfect for Parties
Ideal for entertaining, HGTV Dream Home 2015 expertly combines the dining and great rooms. Guests can sit and relax in the great room, enjoy dessert at the table, or mix and mingle throughout both spaces.
