Jack Thomasson, the HGTV house planner, has overseen every HGTV Dream Home except for the first one in 1997. When he began searching for the perfect site for this year's home, he says he was immediately blown away when he arrived in Winter Park, Colo. "The house is very unique, very different from every other (HGTV Dream Home) we've done," Jack says. "One of my goals every year is to have a house that has its own identity — this house is perfect for its environment."

Back Patio Views

The kitchen and dining area are on the back side of home and open up through glass doors to the private patio space and woods to the rear of the home. A door off the master bath and within the suite also lead to the back patio area.

Lodge Room

Walk inside the front door of the home and you're in a large foyer with vaulted ceilings. John says the stairs are directly ahead, with a large closet to the right. Go into the great room, or "Lodge Room" as he calls it, and you see a large stone fireplace, built-ins for the television, and exposed wood trusses above supporting the vaulted ceiling. Also above is the lookout from the third level loft area.

First Level In Process

Past the Lodge Room is the kitchen area, which features a large central island with a prep sink, walk-in pantry, large main sink and professional-grade appliances. Just off the dining area is a small study with built-ins and a half-bath. A double-door entry leads into the first floor master suite, which features exposed wood ceiling trusses, a fireplace and built-in storage areas. John says the master bath features his-and-her sinks, a walk-in closet, a jetted tub and a tiled shower area.

Open Third Level

At the top of stairs is the overlook. Iron and cable railings will run along the edge where the space opens to the Lodge Room below. John says this room features the best views in the house, and the room would be perfect for a sitting area or second living room. Two guest suites fill up the rest of the third level, and each suite features a 3/4-bath with a toilet and shower. These bathrooms are split, with the vanity area separate from the toilet and shower.

Central Stairs

A central scissor-type stairway goes up through all three floors. The massive construction uses heavy timber stringers supporting split-log treads. Basically, each step is half a log. The stairway is trimmed with the same iron and cable rails used on the outdoor decks and upper loft area, trimmed out with wooden log newel posts.

Wintertime Warmth

John says the home uses radiant floor heat throughout. After the sub floors were constructed, tubes for the heating system were embedded in a 1-1/2 inch layer of Gyp-Crete (a mixture of gypsum and concrete). This can be topped with any type of flooring — hardwood, carpet or tile. A boiler in the mechanical room pumps heated water throughout the home, and valves regulate the temperature in each room.

Continental Divide

Look out the front windows of HGTV Dream Home 2007, and you'll see the Continental Divide. Architect John Dengler designed the home and says all three levels feature fantastic views. To take advantage of the majestic snow-capped peaks of the Continental Divide visible from the home, John placed three decks in a triangular formation from the front of the home.

Ultimate Ski Community

The home is located in a gated community of just 20 homes, and every home in the development features ski-out/ski-in access. "From the house, you can literally put your skis on, ski down to a major ski lift in season and hit the slopes," Jack says. Dennis R. Saffell, owner of New Frontier Construction, says the 20 homes in Bridger's Cache are located on the Mary Jane / Winter Park / Vasquez ski mountain, at about 9,100 ft. above sea level. Don't worry, there will be no shortage of powder during ski season. "We typically get between 300 to 400 inches of snow a year," he says.

Everything You Need

The multi-million dollar Alpine Club serves as a community center for the 20 homeowners in Bridger's Cache. Amenities include private ski lockers, an entertaining area with a pool table and a complete spa on the lower level with an exercise area and wet and dry saunas. Other features include a stationary resistance swimming pool, two bowling lanes and a round-the-clock concierge service and security.
