First Time Design

HGTV is giving viewers a once-in-a lifetime chance to get off the couch and dive into the world of home makeovers. In First Time Design, the viewers are now calling the shots! With a little guidance from HGTV design mentors Vern Yip, David Bromstad, and Lisa LaPorta, each untrained amateur will be in charge of creating a room makeover for real homeowners. From color choices, to fabric, furniture and budget, our design fan gets to make all the decisions and take all of the credit -- or the blame! Let's just hope their clients like the changes.

They're turning over the design decisions to Lousiana housewife Denise, an HGTV fan with no formal design training. David Bromstad is on hand to give a little guidance, but amateur Denise is calling all the shots. With a budget of $7500 and four days to complete her plan, will she be able to pull off a makeover that the homeowners will love? Watch as the challenges unfold.

John McClain is an energetic advertising exec from Orlando who loves traditional design with a modern flair. His mission: to makeover a master bedroom for the Turpins, who are dead set on a milky palette for their space. With a budget of $7500 and four days to complete the makeover, his ultimated goal is to make the homeowners happy. Will John, an untrained amateur, stick to his guns and infuse the room with rich, bright Moroccan-inspired colors, or find a compromise with a toned-down version of his original plan? Design mentor Vern Yip is on hand to give him a little guidance, but in the end, John has to make all the decisions.

Joshua Roldan is a fast-talking Brooklyn native who loves interior design, but has no formal training. Josh will have to makeover a bedroom for Michal, a young law student who recently moved back in with her Mom. Michal wants her room to feel like a studio apartment, and is hoping Josh can make it a space where she can study and entertain friends. Joshua loves Moroccan themes, but he will have to compromise some of his personal tastes to make the homeowners happy.

Liz Lopez is a fun and outgoing hair stylist from Los Angeles who has always dreamed of being a designer. Now we're giving her the chance to makeover Joyce Tanks' bedroom. Joyce lives with her daughter Delise and her two teenage grandkids. She's young at heart, but her current bedroom doesn't reflect her personality. Vern Yip acts as a mentor as Liz expresses her passion for design, while trying to make the perfect haven for Joyce.

James Blevins is a flight attendant from Gate City, Virginia, who loves traditional design, rich colors, and dramatic accent pieces in his own home. But how will his personal style translate when he's challenged to makeover a room for total strangers? This untrained amateur will have to redesign a large living room space for Janice and Samuel Cummings, who have owned their home for 35 years. Lisa LaPorta is on hand to offer some expert advice, but James is making all the decisions. Will his budget challenges hurt the final design? The homeowners make the call.

Monica Lee Ross is a full-time mother of four from Raleigh, North Carolina. Although Monica is legally blind, she is determined to test her self-taught design skills in a real-world situation.
