Cottage Living Room With Blue Armchairs

This home's main living room is enormous, almost 40 feet long. So designers needed to make it feel cozier and more comfortable. They did this by creating several smaller seating areas that could operate on their own or as one large group, when the occasion required. Furniture was selected with comfort in mind.

Stone House Exterior and Porch

This comfortable house draws its design influences from a mix of traditional, Southern and more modern styles. The family who live here get to use the wraparound porch that has lots of great seating options, including swings.

Porch With White Rocking Chairs

On this deep porch, rocking chairs and a porch swing feel crisp and classic painted white.

Transitional Foyer With Blue Stools

This foyer is smart and style forward with its black front door cutting a sharp contrast to the space's white walls. Bold patterns make a splash of color, starting with the rug's wide stripes, continuing to the upholstered stools.

Reading Nook Under Stairs

This cozy nook makes perfect use of the unusually-shaped cranny underneath the staircase. The built-in bookshelves get higher as the ceiling does. Tall, lidded baskets hide away throws and pillows.

Stairs and Reading Nook

What could easily be an awkward—and therefore unused—space under the stairs is transformed into a charming reading nook. The built-in bench and bookshelves follow the stairs gentle curve.

Reading Nook With Green Cushions

A curved nook becomes the most inviting reading spot, especially with its grass green cushions. To make the shelf styling more texturally interesting, designers turned the books pages out.

Cottage Sitting Area With Leather Armchairs

The armchairs in the living room lighten up the look of leather cushions with a crisp white frame. Bonus points: Leather is easy to clean, so helpful in a house with kids!

Cottage Living Room With Spool Lamp

Throughout the house, there's a subtle, Southern style influence with colorful accents and classic details. But the designers also wanted it to be family friendly, so they filled spaces, like this living room, with durable fabrics and soft curves.

Cottage Great Room With Brown End Tables

The kitchen is at one end of this long great room, a living area at the other. It was important to break up the large space into distinct sections so that the room would feel inviting, not overwhelming.

Blue and White Transitional Kitchen With Black Island

An unexpected element or two can immediately wake up a room and grab attention visually. Here, it's the large, black kitchen island, a dynamic contrast to the rest of the kitchen's pale blues and white.

Transitional Kitchen With Leather Barstools

The kitchen's enormous island becomes the number one hangout spot. There is plenty of room for the kids to do projects or homework, countertop space for meal prep and a sink.

Gray and White Chef Kitchen With White Flowers

Dainty pendants of glass and brass almost disappear during the day against the kitchen's graphic backsplash. On the cabinetry, slim, straight pulls are a clean finish.

Wood Tray on Kitchen Countertop

The kitchen is filled with beautiful objects, from the rustic wood tray to the terracotta planter. Accessories are an easy way to infuse a space with style and texture.

Gray Cottage Kitchen With Potted Trees

Petite potted trees on either side of the kitchen sink visually heighten the space, especially in combination with the striped shade just above them.

Blue Cottage Kitchen With Striped Shade

The pretty blue scale-like pattern of this kitchen's backsplash is surely mermaid approved. The soft, romantic look is continued via the farmhouse sink and striped shade.

Green Cottage Mudroom With Striped Cushion

Mossy green walls and cabinetry turn this mudroom into an inviting space at the end or beginning of the day's adventures. Baskets neatly store smaller items above and below the bench. Wall hooks handle the hats and coats.

Neutral Transitional Bedroom With Blue Check Pillows

Stay within a neutral palette in the bedroom while still creating a space that's plenty interesting. Here, the white bed's caning at the foot and headboard is welcome texture. And pillows in a mix of patterns and textiles are another place to bring in some fun.

Foyer Console and Gold Mirror

Random objects lying on a tabletop can become a pile of clutter. Gather them on a tray and presto! They look pulled together. A tray on this foyer console is the ideal catch-all for daily knick knacks.

Gray Cottage Bathroom With Rolled Towels

This bathroom vanity follows a gentle curve. Curves like this help a room feel soft and welcoming, in contrast to lots of clean, crisp lines.

Gray Cottage Sitting Room With Black Ottomans

To keep this room welcoming to all ages, designers brought in performance fabrics, soft edges and comfortable textiles. Strong contrasts—like the black ottomans—push the design in an exciting visual direction.

Blue and Red Shabby Chic Bedroom

Instead of one large rug, this shabby chic bedroom uses two smaller ones, each under the end of the twin beds. The look is a smart one for a bedroom that also has carpet.

Blue Shabby Chic Bedroom With Pink Rug

Putting a dresser in between this bedroom's twin beds means there's a left over wall space just right for a desk. Small-scale patterns in rosy pink bring romantic softness without being at all fussy.

Blue Shabby Chic Bedroom With Storage Bench

Large benches at the foot of each bed also bring extra storage to this bedroom. A dresser is used as the nightstand (more storage!).

Cottage Sitting Area With Wicker Ottoman

Sturdy outdoor furniture is also plush and comfortable for this indoor outdoor sitting area. It gets a style boost from brown-and-white gingham pillows.

Porch Swing With Striped Pillows

In the spirit of the rest of the home's slight Southern influences, the porch needs a porch swing, of course. Mint julep optional.
