California Cottage Refreshed for New Owners

Built in 1920 as a summer cottage-by-the-sea, this classic, north Laguna cottage long outlived its original owners. Now, refreshed and restored, the home echoes all the soul of the early 20th century, but still gives its surf-focused family the essence of 21st century modern living.

Front Entrance Pairs Modern Door, Classic Shingles

A closer look at the front entrance reveals a chic black door matched with warm cedar shingles. The result? A space that's stylish while staying true to its roots. The French Bulldog makes a cute addition, too.

Sliding Glass Doors Lead to Rooftop Lounge

Upstairs, sliding glass doors open to a cool rooftop lounge. With a wall of cushioned benches and a large table to the left, this outdoor space is ideal for sunbathing, reading a book or entertaining a group of friends.

Contemporary Lounge Takes Cues From Ocean

Inspired by the ocean views ahead, the designers outfitted this lounge with light blue furniture. Potted plants decorate the space and provide a touch of fresh greenery.

Cottage Boasts Backyard With Private Pool

Around the back of the house, twin chaises and an umbrella create a comfortable poolside lounge. While the owners relax in the shade, their kids can play in the water and soak up some Vitamin D.

Open Kitchen Includes Pretty Pendant Lights

To update the cottage for its new owners, the design team opened the kitchen and outfitted the space with a large island. Glass pendant lights illuminate the space overhead, while four wood barstools give the family room to share a meal together.

Black Beams, Chandelier Showcase Vaulted Ceilings

Stepping inside, guests will find a great room that's rich with natural light. Steel beams painted black offer a cool contrast to the crisp white walls, while a large chandelier further accentuates the vaulted ceilings.

Contemporary Living Room Designed for Whole Family

After a long day by the water, the owners and their kids can retreat to this comfortable living area. Here, a plush gray sectional allows everyone to stretch out, while a modern fireplace promises to keep the space cozy and warm all evening. Rustic wood trim, meanwhile, makes for a unique visual.

Soothing Neutral-Hued Master Suite

With plush pillows and soft white linens, this master suite easily encourages the owners to put up their feet for the evening. A floating nightstand keeps essentials like a glass of water within reach, while a modern lamp allows for late-night reading.

Fresh Master Bath With Black Accents

With a modern tub, double vanity and chic pendant lights, this black-and-white master bathroom feels both fresh and a little bit glamorous. At the same time, wood floors encourage a sense of flow from the bathroom door to the closet.
