The House

“Our Italianate home has a stately look, with its tall windows and elegant dentil molding, but the fresh white color, wraparound porch, and brick-lined walkway make it inviting," say homeowners Kara and Matt Henderson.

Elongated second-floor windows appear even more impressive thanks to the ornate molding above them. The porch roofline has it too. And, to top it all off, the placement of the hanging baskets accentuates the porch’s curve. The couple alternated ferns with showy bright pink vincas that flower all summer long.

The House

“We like the symmetrical shape of our foursquare so much that we redid some landscaping so it’s symmetrical, too. Altogether it creates a peaceful place to come home to," say homeowners Melissa and Michael Tracy.

Two different styles of shutters means twice as much character! The outer sets are louvered, with cutouts of a moon on top; the smaller ones in the center each have a single flat panel with topiary shapes. As well, decorative corbels beneath the upper soffit give the home some extra architectural appeal. The wood’s dark color echoes the front door.

ln the yard, the dense row of ferns in front of the porch was in place when the Tracys moved in, helping to soften the sharp lines of the house. Low-maintenance hostas frame the walkway to the front door.

And how to work flowers into an already full yard? Think beyond the lawn. The Tracys lined their steps and topped the porch piers with pots featuring a mix of colorful annuals, along with heat-loving Chinese evergreen.

Back when it was white, the front door stuck out way too much. Michael stripped off the paint and did a rich walnut stain. “It’s a better fit for the house—it blends nicely with the brick,” he says. (760 Traditional Shaker wood door)

The House

“Our Victorian has the same cedar-shake siding from when Beverly’s grandpa moved in shortly after it was built, and the same blue-gray color Beverly’s parents painted it when they lived there. It’s timeless!" Beverly and Don Clark, homeowners. "We made the door red and added shutters for even more charm.”

Concrete Grecian urns near the top of the porch steps make the entrance appear more grand. Red geraniums go with the front door; vinca offer volume.

The old concrete path was functional but meh. Brick in varying shades of red gives historic cred—you’d never know it was new. And to bring even more brightness to the small lawn, Don and Beverly planted a round flower bed with bursts of purple and red (a favorite color). Lilyturf gives it texture. The brick border suits the home’s traditional style and nods to the brick of the path and steps.
